I'm looking for some information on the Warner's 1926 film with Patsy
Ruth Miller entitled "Broken Hearts of Hollywood." I found a website
that stated the film survived, but not where. Has anyone seen it?
The reason I ask is that I found the following in The Reel Journal,
July 10, 1926, page 6:
" 'Broken Hearts of Hollywood' will bring to the screen every one of
the Warner stars and contract players including John Barrymore, Syd
Chaplin, Dolores Costello, George Jessel, Rin-Tin-Tin, Monte Blue,
Willard Louis, Irene Rich, Louise Fazenda, Patsy Ruth Miller and
others. In addition, the regular cast includes such popular players
as Louise Dresser, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., and others."
According to imdb.com and other sources on the web, PRM, Douglas
Fairbanks, Jr. and Louise Dresser are in the cast, but the others are
not listed, even in notes to the film. I'm assuming it would have
worked like "Show People" with its various cameos of silent stars.
Anyway, I'm hoping to hear that indeed this is true and that the other
folks listed above are in the film briefly.
Thanks for your help, Lisa |

According to this list posted by Jon Mirsalis in 1999, it does
survive. I haven't seen it. If the link doesn't work, here's the
surviving WB silents list:
"So here's the surviving Warner Bros. list: (Title, Year)

I've seen 19 of these, mostly thanks to film festivals, TCM and such,
a much higher number than I would have imagined when I first saw this

July 10, 1926, page 6:
It played at Cinecon in 1993 or 1995. Fairbanks Jr. and Buddy Rogers
were in attendance.
It turned out that Eastman House shipped the print but hadn't looked at
it and it had Czech titles on it. Fairbanks was mortified and joked
afterward that he was looking forward to the Cantonese version.
The film isn't an award winner... someone improvised a translation from
the audience... it's one of those "don't come to Hollywood, you will be
eaten alive" stories, not really like Show People at all, other than
the fact that there are cameos in it.
I suspect that the reason it hasn't played anywhere is that someone
would need to carefully translate every title, and it's not a big
enough picture to warrant the work that would go into that.
Eric (who really is going away again, I promise)
Perhaps it would not justify a DVD. Still I would like to see it in
its present state and would suggest a direct transfer to VCD under a
study program. Similar films in the past were issued by USA Archives
(I have copies of several titles) |

Lisa, try asking at SilentComedians.com . Somebody there may be able to
tell you more, plus there are other Syd Chaplin fans there.
