Watching The Anniversary Party with Jennifer Jason Ligh and Alan
Cummins,
and discovering they had written, produced, directed and acted in it,
I was
strongly reminded of T.S. Eliot’s The Cocktail Party. Were they
inspired
by it? Or was it just a coincidence, a case of „great minds thinking
alike“?

Here the synopsis to the Anniversary Party:

„Joe and Sally Therrian have a party to celebrate several important
junctures in their marriage: their 6th anniversary, their decision to
start a family and their reconciliation after a yearlong separation.
They have invited their closest friends, their past and current
temptations and (to avoid a lawsuit) their contentious neighbors. An
unexpected gift sends the party spiraling out of control and unleashes
an explosion of painful confessions. The celebration becomes a
scorching dissection of a marriage on the brink.“

Synopsis
Edward and Lavinia Chamberlayne are separated after five years of
marriage. She leaves Edward just as they are about to host a cocktail
party at their London home, and he has to come up with an explanation
for why Lavinia is not present, in order to keep up social
appearances. Lavinia is brought back by a mysterious Unidentified
Guest at the party, who turns out to be a psychiatrist whom Edward and
Lavinia both consult. They each learn that they have been deceiving
themselves and must face life's realities. They learn that their life
together, though hollow and superficial, is preferable to life apart.
This message is difficult for the play's third main character,
Edward's mistress, to accept. She, with the psychiatrist's urging,
also moves on towards a life of greater honesty and salvation and
becomes a Christian martyr in Africa. Two years later, Edward and
Lavinia, now better adjusted, host another cocktail party.

As for the JJL and AC, I thought it was exciting that they did it all
on their own, and got companies to donate clothes and furniture. There
should be more efforts like this
made by actors. You know, instead of waiting about for someone to hire
you,
get your own show on the road. Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland did it
of course . but
only in the movies.

There are no "great minds" in Hollywood, only "great thieves".
And there are no coincidences in Hollywood, only "similarities".

What, the movie? Or their interview? Or my post?

The plot itself - you know, a party which starts as
a superficial and ends up with people tearing
their entrails out, is definitely not a new idea.

But then, new ideas really are hard to come by.

I'm just the kind of person who thinks artists
really should get their own show on the road,
because if you just wait for others to help you,
you wait for ever. God helps those who help
themselves, says the bible, that's why, whenever
I see a plate of pasta or chocolate or cheese,
hey, I just help myself.

Time for dinner!
