the fight scene between Borgnine and Lancaster, that's about as
real as it gets, seen fights, been in them, great stuff. Sinatra
was great, also, that whole segment has to be rated as one
of the best of all time by whoever does the rating. TCM the
other night.

Someone showed me a link to some current bodyguard of porn stars who
is a tremendous fighter.   I noted that his fights don't look at all
like movie fights.

In Thin Red Line (a novel yet to be properly filmed) James Jones wrote
that most knife fights are over in a few seconds, and (in a possible
swipe at the film of FHTE), long knife fights "only happen in the
movies".

Who here has read the novel FHTE? My favorite section is during the
crap game when they critically rate the various cowboy stars. "John
Wayne, they already got him in Adventure, pretty soon they'll be
moving him into Drama..."

I've read it, no favorite section, liked it pretty evenly.

Nobody seems to have mentioned that there isn't a fight between Borgnine and
Lancaster in the film, unless you count Lancaster threatening Borgnine with
a bottle.  No blows landed.

I'm presuming OP means between Borgnine and Clift.

Jim Beaver

Yeah, your right, but, the tension, the situation, I thought it was
a great scene!

Borgnine certainly has played characters that look tough but lose
fights.

In "Vera Cruz" Gary Cooper knocked him out into the street if I
remember correctly, in Johnny Guitar he was...

The fight in the bar when Dobbs and Curtin try to get their money from
McCormick in "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" has always seemed to
me to be the best fight in movies--three tired men who can barely land
a punch after the first one, and not a meat-slapper to be heard.

Reply:-
Perhaps the director was able to assist them with some personal knowlege.
He had been Amateur Lightweight Boxing Championship of California,
winning 22 of 25 bouts. I suppose he would not have allowed the extravagant
fake punches often seen, which in reality would surely have shattered both
fist
and jaw.
I cant find confirmation, but I seem to remember that he was involved in
fighting
outside the ring, from time to time.

There are some reports of his participation in unsanctioned fights
from time to time, and out of his division as well, in venues not set
up for proper supervision.
Alcohol is said to have been a factor.

I never saw it in the theatre, so I got an added effect--the tv print
made the men indistinguishable in the darkness.

Sinatra was great, also

Donna Reed wasn't too shabby in it either...

Kim Basinger in the 1979 TV miniseries was infinitely more believable
as a whore than Donna Reed. And Roy Thinnes was a more fascistically
menacing Holmes than Philip Ober. I'd rate Sinatra and Joe Pantaliano
roughly even as Maggio.

And it features Prewitt in the stockade -- an important section of the
novel totally missing from the film.

Rivals Lonesome Dove as my alltime favorite miniseries.

Dang, haven't seen the tv deal, sounds like a good watch, watching
"Streets of Laredo" again off and on, Joey Garza, believe he upsets
Judge Roy Bean in the next segment. "Lonesome Dove" is my favorite,
also, just the banter makes it for me. Blue
