Coppola's period fantasy YOUTH WITHOUT YOUTH runs two hours, and is
Bertolucci-beautiful to behold. For me, unfortunately, it was also
impenetrable. (Had it not been Francis, I'd have turned it off.)
Less accessible than THE FOUNTAIN ...and not recommended.

I recently saw that flick not knowing it was Coppola until the opening

credits and I had never heard of the film so I went in cold. While I
agree for the most part with you, it isn't as unwatchable as many
other films out there today. Actually I came away from it kind of
split. I liked a lot of it but was disappointed in it as film. But as
an under realized movie rather than an out-and-out clunker.

Indeed, for this movie, I bear Coppola more resentment than
disrespect. I'm neither particularly stupid nor hard to please --
moreover, as a fan, I gave him every benefit of the old college try --
yet I still have no idea why he made this movie. And, if he didn't
make it for me, then for whom? (My *guess* is that he read the
original story, and connected with something ineffable... which turned
out to be also personal and/or unfilmable...)
