LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Speed Racer," Warner Bros' big budget family
adventure from directors Andy and Larry Wachowski ("The Matrix"
trilogy), crashed and burned at North American box offices this past
weekend, according to final figures released on Monday.

While initial estimates gave the film, which cost $150 million to make
according to some media reports, a disappointing second-place finish
with $20.2 million in ticket sales -- barely beating out Fox's poorly
reviewed "What Happens In Vegas," -- revised figures have now down-
shifted that total to $18.6 million and a weak third place finish.

The revised figure put "Vegas," which turned in a final figure of
$20.7 million, at second place behind "Iron Man."

Going into the weekend, "Speed Racer" had been Warner's best hope of
giving the current box office champ a run for its money. But "Iron
Man" trounced its competition, scoring a weekend box office of more
than $50 million and pushing its roughly two-week total to $177
million.

What I can't understand is why they thought that making a movie out of a
cartoon that sucked wouldn't also suck.  The only cartoons that sucked
harder than the Speed Racer cartoons were the animated Star Trek cartoons,
where every character talked offscreen while the "camera" focused on the
unmoving face of Kirk or perhaps Spock who, in a remarkable feat of
animation, would raise an eyebrow.

I think the Wachowskis loved it and imagined they could perfect it.

Hi Heckulous.

I saw the trailer for Speed racer yesterday.

I can't think of any possible reason I would ever go to see it.

OK the most logical reason not to watch or rely on speed racer is
about gas price and MPG. The more you speed your car the less mileage
you get out of it and add to the pain in the ass $4 gas price.

The animated Trek however had some incredible designs. Watch them and

just pay attention to the backgrounds... they had some great artists on
that show. All the money seems to have gone to them and the writers,
though, as you're right that Filmation wasn't one to have a high frame
rate :)

The animated Trek was fine, and they even adapted a Larry Niven short
story, "The Soft Weapon."

Somebody upthread is confusing animation with storytelling. As
animation, Trek was awful, albeit not any more or less awful than most
animated shows of its era. As storytelling, though, Trek was pretty
good and, sometimes, brilliant. The episode "Yesteryear" ranks high
among the best Trek stories of any generation, IMHO. I thought "The
Soft Weapon," which you mentioned, was also very good.

The animated Trek show works much better as radio.

Like "The War of the Worlds"? ?:]

The stories were great, particularly that one, but the animation was the
absolute worst.
