'Iron Man' soars over 'Vegas'
'Speed Racer' settles for third-place finish

By ANTHONY D'ALESSANDRO

Paramount's "Iron Man" continued to hammer out box office gold in its
second Friday of the summer season with $15.3 million, however, Fox-
Regency's "What Happens in Vegas" trumped Warner Bros.' "Speed Racer"
for second place.
Playing at 4,111 sites, "Iron Man's" second Friday reps the third best
among Marvel's titles in May behind "Spider-Man's" $19.9 million in
2002 and "Spider-Man 3's" $17.2 million last year. Both pics
respectively posted second weekend hauls of $71.4 million and $58.2
million. Through its first eight days, the domestic B.O. for "Iron
Man" currently stands at $141.9 million.

Grossing $7.2 million from 3,215 locations, "Vegas" repped an opening
day high for a romantic comedy in May, besting the $6.5 million
charted by 1999's "Notting Hill" which went on to generate a three-day
take of $21.8 million.

The Wachowski Brothers' "Speed Racer" slotted third on Friday with
$6.2 million from 3,606 sites. Despite the pic's soft start, "Racer"
still has an eye on arriving in second place once the checkered flag
is waved at the weekend box office.

As is typical during the school season, most family fare fuels up from
Saturday and Sunday matinees. Live-action PG pics such as 2001's "Spy
Kids" have seen spikes as high as 60% between their Friday and
Saturday figures.

Claiming fourth was Sony’s romantic comedy "Made of Honor," ringing up
$2.4 million at 2,734 engagements, a 57% decline from its first Friday
and a running eight-day cume of $21.1 million.

Universal's Tina Fey-Amy Poehler comedy "Baby Mama" took fifth with
$1.9 million from 2,627, down 46%, bringing its domestic take in the
middle of its third frame to $36.5 million.

The David Mamet-helmed drama-actioner "Redbelt," distributed by Sony
Pictures Classics, kicked up $325,000 after expanding its theater
count from six to 1,379 yesterday. Since opening last Friday,
"Redbelt" has earned $422,000.

Another specialty label title, Paramount Vantage's "Son of Rambow" saw
a 144% uptick in its second Friday after upping its theaters from five
to 36 yesterday. "Rambow" generated $36,000 for a per location take of
$1,000.

That it placed third instead of second at the box office might have

a wee-bit of a surprise, but I doubt the executives predicted much
more.

As was discussed on the HOLLYWOOD ELSEWHERE site (http://hollywood-

SPEED RACER will probably be used as a sales tool for Blu-Ray and HD
TV sets later this year.

I can see why that would work, those bright images replicated down a
whole row of TV screens.

LOL! I took my son to see Speed Racer tonight and his mom came along
after a Mothers' Day dinner. He loved it because he's a tween boy.
We loved it because we got every minute detail that was pulled from
one of the original cartoon episodes.

She said she enjoyed it but wouldn't want to sit through it again.

I said, "I can't wait to see it, truly, put my Blu-Ray player and
hi-def tv to the test."

All brightly colored things like cartoons and animation are not really
good tests. Those things always look clearer, and make a TV look better
than it is. It's not TESTING it at all. The test would be if a scene
has shades of light. Those splashy colors are going to look lovely, but
they would anyway, anywhere.

Here's what I think would put the Blu-Ray player and HDTV to the test:
THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES.

Here's what I think would put the Blu-Ray player and HDTV to the test:
THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES.

Maybe you'd want something where film grain was never involved...
like, say, REVENGE OF THE SITH.

I never saw REVENGE OF THE SITH, so I can't pick up what you really
mean.  But I think the fair test would be one that showed the film grain
exactly, so that the full intent of the cinematographer is experienced.
I saw U TURN in the theater, and Oliver Stone made good use of
different film stock (as he did in several other films).  I liked the
story, with its town of quirky people, but it was made more interesting
with the changes in texture.  When it came out on VHS, I watched it at
home but felt nothing.  Those changes in texture had definitely enhanced
the theater experience, but with the diminished resolution, all that was
lost.  I was made aware of just how much is diminished through these
older TVs.  The opulence of THE AGE OF INNOCENCE was a character in that
film, and I went home and told a couple of friends and relatives about
it, how great a movie it was.  I was very gushy.  When it came out on
VHS, it didn't have the impact it had on me in the theater.  All the
fine performances were of course intact, but I did sorely miss those
sumptuous visual extras.  The dream sequence in THE EXORCIST was another
memorable and effective use of grainy film stock (the sound, too).

I'm going to finally be getting one of those HDTVs (and Blu Ray) no
later than the end of next month.  Actually, we could go out and do it
today if we settled for less than what we want.  If when I get it home
and set this thing up, and it doesn't capture the detail I'm describing,
I'm going to consider it a colossal waste of money.  The 36" SD TV I'm
using now has a wonderful picture, but it has the shortcomings of SD.
Yet it was still good enough that when I watched THE ASSASSINATION OF
JESSE JAMES a couple of months ago, even then I was flabbergasted.  When
I see it again on HD and Blu Ray, I expect to become ONE with color and
light.

'MFalc1' is right that I suggested SITH because it was digital all the
way ...which ought to make the most eye-popping *demo* of HDTV and Blu-
Ray, although the best *test* of same is a technically complex matter
(where film-grain might even be irrelevant.

Re "a colossal waste of money": Our eye can detect 'better' more
easily than 'good'. So, although you'll likely see the various flaws
in your new picture, you'd be the first owner I've known who even
considered going back...
