At this point, no silent film (to my knowledge) has been released, or
announced for release, on Blu-Ray. But it will happen one day. (And for
those who ask "Why watch a silent film reformatted to 16x9?" I answer "Don't
worry. They will be pillarboxed to 4x3 with black bands on the sides.") But
what will be the first silent film to get this treatment?

My guess: The General. Here's why:

* It's a popular title likely to sell well.
* It's in the public domain, so the release won't be delayed by licensing
fights.
* There are excellent source materials in 35mm film (or so I've been told).
* There are several recorded scores to choose from.
* It's a visually beautiful film which will take advantage of Blu-Ray's
abilities.

Any other suggestions?

It might be an important silent as yet unreleased on DVD, like the
long-rumored "The Big Parade" or even "Greed". Combining first Blu-Ray
with first DVD release would get more publicity, I think.

My suggestion based on my reputation for going over the top.

Seeing that Blue Ray is be perfection both in picture and sound - why
not firstly have film of the orchestra coming up out of the pit to
play the overture - then sink back down to play the film?
Alternatively if not an orchestra, an horgan? This part could be in
cinemascope and stereophonic sound with woofers and tweeters and be in
coloured high definition.

The film chosen would have to be one that is in the best condition and
I agree that "The Big Parade" would be a good choice.

What do peoples think?

And, if I may coin a phrase, a silent newsgroup is never really silent
-- I listen to pre-1950 samba recordings while reading and posting here,
and I'm sure many others do the same.

Meanwhile, one positive step is that Criterion has just announced it
will release its first BR batch this fall. I remember my decision to
buy a DVD player was based on their entry in to the DVD market, and
that that first player was WELL over the cost of a BR player right
now, but then times are different, and personally I'm waiting for
something under $200.

I posted something about Criterion's plans on NitrateVille here:

http://www.nitrateville.com/viewtopic.php?t=1070

Much like with DVD, the studios are slowly working their way backwards
(when Criterion releases it, The Third Man will become the first movie
from the first half of the 20th century on Blu-Ray-- unless Pinocchio,
also scheduled, beats it), but I wouldn't even start wondering about
silents until at least Warner's recent high-def restorations such as
Wizard of Oz and Adventures of Robin Hood come out.

IF what is listed below is true, then silent movies on Blu-Ray
might take longer then one might think.

Blu-ray player sales down despite format victory

CUT TO THE CHASE

But more likely is what NPD's high-def video analysts have been
harping on for a while: that DVD
is "good enough" for most consumers. And that the picture offered by a
Blu-ray Disc and
accompanying player doesn't appear so overwhelmingly better than a
standard DVD and an
upconverting player that many consumers can't justify the dramatically
increased cost.
I don't expect Blu-Ray to enjoy the sort of market penetration that DVD's

got, although lower prices will help. My prediction is that it will be the
laserdisc to DVD's VHS--the cinephile's choice. But cinephiles are the
people who will buy silent films on BD (the stupid acronym for Blu-Ray).

I review Blu-Ray players for PC World, yet I haven't bought one myself. For
a long time, I was waiting for the format war to finish. Now the war is
over, and I'm waiting for prices to go down, for players with the promised
but delayed interactive features, and for the kinds of movies I'd want to
appear in the format.

I agree. That's why I predicted a popular pd choice rather than something

owned by a studio.

That gives me something to hope for.

I've never had the chance to see _The Big Parade_, so I bought the
laserdisc on eBay. Then, of course, my laserdisc player broke!

Frankly, I can't imagine even a pristine silent print looking much
better in BD. And since the BD discs are overpriced to begin with, I
really doubt if we'll see many, if any, silents. My prediction is
that eventually BD will fall by the wayside before it ever really gets
going. If it were not for all those PS3 gamers, Bluray would have
been a flop. And those folks are not gonna buy THE GENERAL.

The article about BD having a disappointing showing (link listed
above) pretty much sez it all. I bought an HD DVD player last Xmas
cuz the price was right. I'm sorry now. But looking at the current
economy and the price of BD players - plus the fact that every 10
movies you buy in BD will cost you between $100 and $150 more than
their DVD counterpart is going make BD most unattractive to the
average movie collector - many, many of whom can't see a significant
improvement anyway - also point out above.....

It will be sometime before we can download 50GB at a decent rate. I tried

Apple TV's download service, and it's HDTV doesn't come near what I get
through the Dish Network, which is nothing compared to what Blu-Ray could
do.
