Sounds good except some will be disappointed that the "SmileBox"
version will only be on Blu-ray. It's also too bad that all the
goodies from the Ultimate Collector's Edition (standard def) aren't
packaged with the Blu-ray version (at a higher price of course). Note
at bottom that "Cinerama Adventure" is included as a special feature.
Hopefully that will include the Bu-ray disc.

HOW THE WEST WAS WON
THE SPECTACULAR CINEMATIC EPIC IS RESTORED TO ALL ITS “CINERAMA®”
GLORY WITH THREE BONUS-FILLED EDITIONS: ULTIMATE COLLECTORS,
TWO DISC-SPECIAL & BLU-RAY™ HI-DEF!

Burbank, Calif. April 28, 2008 – The wondrous western historical saga
How the West Was Won gallops onto home theatre screens August 26th in
three new restored and remastered editions. One of only two narrative
feature films produced in the original Cinerama® three-panel
widescreen process, How the West Was Won is a stunning epic, following
four generations of a courageous New England farm family as they
travel to the fertile Ohio Valley during America’s early westward
expansion.

M-G-M and Cinerama®, Inc. spared no expense to give this sprawling
Western saga the huge vistas made possible with the original Cinerama®
process. After its initial theatrical engagements in theaters equipped
with three synchronized projectors for Cinerama® presentation, the
film was subsequently presented on traditional theater screens with
the three separate Cinerama® panels being optically joined to form a
standard 35mm 2.35:1 widescreen image, leaving most subsequent viewers
puzzled by the annoying ‘join lines.’

Following several years of careful development, the technicians at
Warner Bros. Motion Picture Imaging perfected a technology that could
finally eliminate the ‘join lines,’ and unify the images into a superb
viewing experience that captures the essence of the production’s
initial road show exhibitions, with an aspect ratio of 2.89:1.

This ultimate western film gets the Ultimate treatment with How the
West Was Won Ultimate Collector’s Edition ($59.92 SRP). The two disc
Standard Definition Ultimate Collector’s Edition is loaded with
collectible memorabilia including a 20-page theatrical press book
reproduction, 10 behind-the-scenes photo cards and 10 postcards, and
an exclusive movie poster offer. Streeting simultaneously will also be
a glorious Blu-ray™ Hi-Def ($34.99 SRP) version. Exclusive to Blu-ray
is the “SmileBox” version of the film which presents the image with a
unique curvature that virtually recreates the true Cinerama®
experience in a home theater. This Blu-ray™ Hi-Def Edition comes with
a special Digi-book packaging featuring 32-pages of rare press
materials and behind-the-scenes photos. The third new edition is a Two
Disc-Special Edition in standard definition ($20.97 SRP).

Some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, including John Wayne, Henry Fonda,
James Stewart, Richard Widmark, Gregory Peck, Lee J. Cobb, Debbie
Reynolds and Carroll Baker star in How the West Was Won. Set between
1839 and 1889 against the backgrounds of the Louisiana Purchase, the
Civil War, buffalo hunters, the Pony Express and the first
transcontinental railroad, the film consists of five segments, with
direction by Henry Hathaway, John Ford and George Marshall, and
written by James R. Webb and John Gay, suggested by a Life Magazine
series of the same name. The film was the winner of 3 Academy Awards®
(Best Screenplay, Best Sound and Best Editing) as well as being
nominated for an additional five Oscars®, including Best Picture. In
1997, How the West Was Won was selected by the Library of Congress for
preservation in the US National Film Registry.

Probably.

Here's the cover art for the SD Ultimate Collector's Edition:

Nice to see the Cinerama logo on the front.

Dave Strohmaier saw the Smilebox version projected on a big screen at
Warners yesterday. He says it's just incredible. The curved screen
effect really works, he reports. He also says that the panel matching
is unbelievable and the panel lines are all but invisible; he says some
people may not even see them.

I'll be popping for a Blu-Ray player when the gummint sends me that big
check.

Warners has apparently sent out a correction to the suggested list
price for the SD Ultimate Collector's Edition. It should by $39.92
instead of $59.92. Of course some web dealers will discount that lower
figure by as much as 30 per cent so it's not a bad deal...even though
I still wish it was in Smilebox format.

I'll also be popping for a Blu-ray player for this release. I've been
sitting on the HD fence up until now but I've gotta' have this in both
HD and Smilebox!

The large frame from "Search for Paradise" on the Cinerama Adventure
site is much closer to what we'll see. The "Oklahoma" frame is a very
poor frame grab off what appears to be a VHS copy of the DVD.

That "frame" grab shows just the most incredible color! It's a shame that
title may never get reprinted and that we only have the faded print from
Australia (and thank God for that). I enjoyed the clips that David showed
in Seattle back in the day.

Does it go straight from the overture to the MGM logo. The current DVD
has the Turner logo in
between and really spoils the effect?

The current DVD is just a total abortion. Since there is no three strip
Turner logo I think it's safe to assume that Warners will treat this
version with just a bit more respect for the material.

When Crest set up the center eye of one of the three panel cameras as
an optical printer camera head, it certainly had an opportunity to make
a number of new logos, using the center panel, only.

At the very least they could have at least put the FBI Warning in 3 Strip!

They tried to but they wound up using the wrong camera and the FBI
warning was in Cinemiracle, making it completely useless. Then there
was some consideration of shooting a KGB warning with John Lasher's
Kinopanorama rig. But the KGB is kaput so the whole idea was dropped.

Does anyone know what audio format(s) will be on the BD version? Blu-Ray can
carry some incredible sound, but seldom does.

The best audio in a home format I ever heard was the PCM track on The Last
Waltz Blu-Ray disc (BD is the stupid acronym). And only some BD players are
capable of sending out that incredible sound to an amplifier.

But those tracks are rare.
