So if Baron Kurtz, Popescu and Dr. Winkel helped Harry Lime fake his
own death, then why did Kurtz call Holly Martins to arrange a meeting?
Most likely, Holly would just go home, things wouldn't be stured up
again, and the police would be looking in the wrong directions. What
Kurtz did eventually led to Lime's downfall as well as his own (he was
arrested). |

Good analysis.
EK: Thank you.
b: Does the Anna character have a designation, too?
EK: I think we have a little moon-spinning here by Greene and company
- "The eternal feminine draws us on.."
Anna really is too good to be a true character. She's the one
idealization in the entire affair - The good hearted, supremely loyal
theatrical mistress of the black-hearted child poisoner. In view of
this I suppose she could be a symbol of the folly of blind love and
complete trust in another; or perhaps an exemplar of a religious-style
faith in the love of another, which would fit in with Greene's
preoccupations. |

The polemical references to Vienna during & after the Napoleonic Wars
& during the Metternich period usually fly right over my head when I
watch THE THIRD MAN. They must be extremely subtle. |
