Feuillade's Judex is just extremely entertaining. Everything I've read
about it i.e. reviews have just been glowing.
At first I was put off a bit by the actors "faking" to the camera, a
very stagy throw-back, but was soon just pulled into the plot and
characters.

I have one minor complaint about the DVD production itself. One of my
DVD players recognizes the format the chapters are in, but my main one
does not, so I have to remember where I am and go back through the menu.
This is overcome by simply using the other DVD player which I can stop,
and it remembers where I am and goes back to it.

I've run into about 5 DVD's formated this way, it's a minor thing since
I have a player that works with it. I just hope that la Roue, which I
pre-ordered isn't the same way. Both are from Flicker Alley.

I'm about 2 thirds of the way through Judex, and enjoying it so much I
ordered Les Vampires today.

End...Gush.....

SPOILER ALERT if you haven't seen the rest of the film yet.

The only problem I have with Judex is built into the plot. When
Judex's efforts swing towards reformation rather than punishment the
plot (to me) looses some of it's interest. The sensational aspect
takes second place towards redemption and a love story- though
Musidora does pop in now and then to liven things up. I guess I'm
comparing this to Les Vampires, which isn't fair. Les Vampires is a
series of thrills strung together with a truly absurd plot thread,
whereas Judex is much more unified and a far more sophisticated piece
of work.

Does anyone know if any of the sequel "The New Mission of Judex"
survives?

I also am trying to locate a copy of the sequel and the 1934 remake.

If any one knows of one I would like to chat with them.
