Just a note to let you all know how my experience with Andre Boisvert's
single system slate for video has been going. You can see his slate at:

I've been using it on appropriate shoots for about a month now and have had
positive responses from the producers and camera people I've used it with.
I've yet to hear anything back from a post person but I do feel good about
having the appropriate information indelibly recorded at the head of
interviews or other changes of audio. I've also had the feeling that the
people I work with were appreciative of the extra effort and I feel that it
has given me more of a professional appearance....almost as thought I
actually give a shit! :)

I'm inching along. The shopping cart is killing me. I had no idea

saying, oh i didnt hear the note you left on the audio track as no one
logged it. |

Seems like you'd need a lot of stick on things to cover all of the
variables. A nice idea would be to have windows that you could type
the display info into.

I'll offer a no-frills basic slate that'll work for everybody. Then,
if you want, you'll be able to customize your slate by adding ID tags
to match your kit.

Andre,
One comment to add regarding a "clapper" As jay points out, it would
be useful for determining offset of audio to video because of all the
visual signal processing. To clap the slate ONCE before shooting is
all that would be needed to determine that offset. It would not be
needed before every take. Any HD shoot, i always have at least one
take "clapped". Downconvert offsets vary widely in post production.

A problem with a lot of mid-level digital cameras is picture latency.
Depending on the mode, it can take as much as three fields for pix to
get scanned off the CCD, DSP'd as desired, and printed to tape. And
there's often no corresponding audio delay.
So a -slapped- slate is a useful calibration step for single system
with these puppies. Does this slate have something to slap?

I like the idea of this. I often keep an analog slate with me "just in
case". This would be nice to stick on the back. If you are that
worried about portable clap, some of those mini clap boards are
usable, and should fit in most bags. |

This slate is a small lightweight velcro affair that is meant to live in
your bag and identify what's on what track. It's not a clapper and honestly
I believe that on most small video shoots you would encounter resistance to
clapping a slate and changing the established work flow. As it is, it's
small, efficient, and effectively documents the key elements an editor would
need to identify what is where and what was used. Andre made me custom stick
ons for my primary mics and rf systems. It works well for what it is....if
it were bigger, heavier and had a clapper it would never live in my bag on a
permanant basis.
