OK, I goofed.
I had a commercial shoot yesterday. Standard look - film 35mm at 24
fps. Normally I do 30fps nd timecode and 48.048K on the Deva. I forgot
the 30 fps tc part and had it set at 29.97 ND. Luckily, The TC Slate
was still set to 29.97 ND as well.
The takes were usually short, 30 seconds. They'll transfer using a
Fostex 824. Any suggestions from the post brothers?

I think 29.97 is the correct frame rate if you're pulling up an

TC doesn't run at fractional rates ( according to SMPTE specs! ) like
29.97 although some audio DAW's have implemented fractional TC adding
to the confusion. 29.97 should really run at 30 NDF in which case all
is ok. the real question is if shooting film, did they run at 24.000
or 23.976 with the aim of TV delivery |

AFIK, the time code is not used to control the speed of any of the
machines. That is done via the sampling rates, so the TC is just used
to find the sync point between sound and picture. If the slate and
the deck were set to the same frame rate then the claps will line up
without a problem. BUT, I hope you cleared the 48.048 with the
transfer house (I'm sure you did!) since they are used to
automatically adding the pull up to film to tape sound transfers.
SInce you already did it for them they must set their decks to
straight 48K with no 1/10 of 1% change.

As long as they know what they got, they can probably deal. With the
fairly common mix up of film and HD video going through the soup these
days, I have regularly sent in 29.97/48 for film, only because in the
same shot the master was an HD cam running 23.97. The film cams were
used as 3rd, 4th, ++ cameras. The post facility was able to deal
without difficulty.
The same can probably said for anything coming in at 48.048, as there
will be a pull down in the process.
And BWF widget can be used to help out the situation if there is a
real problem, but I suspect you'll be fine.

Thanks Phil and Billy. I never heard from post, so I guess it went
fine. I suggested they put the 824 in 29.97.
Hopefully I won't make that mistake again...

Make sure the post house knows the wrong timecode was used. Circle the
29.97NDF and put [OOOPS!] next to it, or call the dailies colorist and warn
them what happened.
If the recording is at 48K but at 29.97 NDF, then it should be possible to
use an external clock source to pull it down to 47.952, which should then
stay in sync with the film. In North America, they almost always playback
24FPS film at 23.976FPS, in SD or HD, so that's where the .1% discrepancy
occurs.
If it's just :30 second takes, it should go out more than 1 frame every
minute or so, possibly a little more, if they don't do the pull-down.
At least the slate agrees with the audio TC, and that's half the battle.
I've had situations where the slate was unreferenced to anything, the audio
person was in 25FPS, and the whole show was shot at 24FPS, shooting in
England, but transferring in LA at 23.976. Lots of fun.
