I won some items on EBAY and one of them is a picture of a Cinerama
theatre but, I don't know which one. Under the marquee there is a sign
that says "Plaza CINERAMA". Could this be one of the Hoyts Plaza
Cinerama theatres in Melbourne or Sydney Australia?

Thanks,

The banner above the boxoffice reads TECHICOLOR, not TECHNICOLOUR.
Those signs were usually locally produced as opposed to being
exploitation items supplied by the filmmaker, so I'd be less inclined
to guess Australia or GB.
Do you have a better view of the lightbulb & fixture type under the
marquee soffitt?
I'd say it's a 20's or 30's era marquee from the drops of the
marquee's corner posts, so it's not a real jet-age looking exterior. |

I strongly suspect the photo is from England, based on the looks of the
people. "Technicolor" is always spelled that way regardless of the
region. British films would carry a credit such as "Colour by
Technicolor".

Lack of neon would suggest that it's no later than the 1930s.

I think, in this instance, your reasoning is faulty. If you visit
Roland's Cinerama site and check the theater page, you'll see no
venues in England with the "Plaza" name. And if you check my list of
the Cinerama bookings of "How The West Was Won," you'll see the only
venues in which the film was booked with the "Plaza" name are the two
Australia venues Roland asked about.
The process of elimination suggests the theater in the photo was in
Australia. Whether it was Sydney or Melbourne, I can't say. Paging
Peter Fraser...?

Yes it's the PLAZA Theatre Sydney which was a CINERAMA installation
from 1958 to the theatre's closure
in 1977. It is now a McDonalds restaurant but there is a Heritage
order on the bulding and it retains
much of the original decor and the original chandeliers. It was built
circa 1929-1930 and was meant to be a GRANDEUR
70MM installation but due to the depression it is very unlikely that
70mm was ever installed,(in 1930) as was originally
proposed.
I saw HTWWW there at least 5 times during the original 15 months
release commencing 26 December 1962.
The original Cinerama screen was 76ft around the curve 28ft tall and
22ft deep. and was 146 degrees.
In December 1966(during Battle of the Bulge season) they got rid of
the strip screen and installed a reduced curve(about 115degrees)
71ft by 29ft solid curved screen.
The last Cinerama film I saw there was a revival of It's a
MAD,MAD,MAD,MAD WORLD in March 1975.

Peter Mason |

TECHNICOLOR is a trade name and was not billed in the UK as Technicolour.
Now that the moniker is owned by Thomson, it is not called Technicouleur. |

You jackass! I do not appreciate being misquoted.
Ever hear of C-O-N-T-E-X-T? If you would've quoted me in full, you
would see that I did not claim there were no cinemas in the whole of
England with the name of Plaza; I was referring only to those cinemas
that could show the Cinerama format. |
