The kind of film that seemingly can only come
from France. My classmates used to joke about
making a film about our school life and how it
will bore everyone to death. French directors,
however, are so good at portraying academic
(especially literary) life, in all its pettiness,
jealousy, oversized egos and subdued romances,
and a little bit of intellectual display. The main
cast is not well known, but certainly reminds me
of people I used to know. I know people exactly
like the main character who is supposed to be
brilliant but is undisciplined and never applies
himself (but who gets all the girls). The director
Emmanuel Bourdieu seems to work with the
same cast over and over again (notably
(Natacha Regnier of _Dreamlife of Angels_
fame). This is a genre that is simply completely
missing in the U.S. (where school life is
generally portrayed as screwball comedies). |
