I've recently acquired the VHS Letterbox edition of this film and
although it states on the
box HI-FI Mono when you play it through a Dolby Pro-Logic or Pro-Logic
11 system it does have
stereo sound but it does seem to have been transferred incorrectly.
There is dialogue coming from the
centre channel and dialogue coming from the right channel so in those
scenes where the actor is located centre right we have a phantom RC
channel. Unfortunately the dialogue from the left channel also seems
to have
been mistakenly sent to the right channel as well(at least for the
first half hour of the film). There is surround sound in certain scenes
such as the scene where Henry and Becket are riding through the
village and they stop momentarily to talk to the young lady on the
balcony, the crowd cheering can be heard through the surround
speakers.
The Dvd appears to have just about all of the dialogue coming through
the centre speaker but I understand the original 35mm mag mix had
directional dialogue (on the 35MM 4 track mag prints and the 70MM 6
track mag prints) so I wonder why they got rid of this for the DVD
release?
Does anybody have the Laser Disc.? Does it have dialogue coming
through the centre and right speakers only?
Regards,
