As part of the AFI at ArcLight series, 2001:A Space Odyssey will play
one showing
January 30 in the ArcLight Cinerama Dome, Hollywood in 70mm and 6
channel magnetic stereo.
Tickets are selling fast and will probably be sold out long before
showtime
They are available now on line at arclightcinemas.com.
We played it the other morning, it was struck in 2000 by Warners and
is generally
very good shape. Excellent color, great mag track, minor black
vertical scratches,
noticeable only on light scenes.

Well of course now any remotely decent seat is gone. We have been
asking the woefully unenlightened ArcLight staff about this for
weeks. I asked on 1/1 and the guy I spoke to seemed not to know what
2001 IS, much less 70mm. Not a hint of such things on the site,
either. This problem goes all the way back to the week before the
Dome closed for the redo a few years ago. There was an interesting
variety of classic movies showing, but it was the best-kept secret in
Hollywood. The place filled up entirely by word of mouth. And some
of us aren't always close enough to the right mouth. 2001 in 70mm
should have a played a regular engagement in the Dome by now. I wish
they would put Mr Sittig in charge of things and let him set up a
regular schedule of special events like this. |

So - If you can bring all this together, why just one showing?
Why not every Sat at midnight for two months?
The 2000 prints are unfortunately grainier than the originals, but still
beautiful. What cinema processor (and sound format) do you use to permit
correct reproduction of the soundtrack?- Hide quoted text -

We are using a CP200, format 42

Is this correct? (I'm not saying it isn't)
I don't recall - were the more recent prints Dolby encoded?
What happened to the Le/Re information? Was it re-mixed, with this
information folded into L/R?
Personally, for films originally released in six-track, I prefer to hear
them in that format, even if there's a bit of tape hiss. . . |

A passage from my article "1968: A Roadshow Odyssey":
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Over the years, prints of "2001" have been prepared in a variety of
audio formats, including magnetic stereo prints in both 35mm and 70mm
at a time when few movies were mixed and released in a multichannel
format. The film's original 70mm prints were in the so-called Todd-AO
channel layout (left/left-center/center/right-center/right/surround),
which was standard at the time. Contemporary 70mm prints of "2001"
have utilized Dolby SR noise reduction and have been made available in
the original Todd-AO channel layout, as well as in the modern-day
"5.1"-channel configuration (left/center/right/left-surround/right-
surround/LFE). There have been reports that at least one 70mm print
prepared for the 2001/2002 re-release was in the DTS-70 digital sound
format, though sources at Warner Bros. (the current distributor of the
film) have denied that such prints were available. (Recent 35mm
prints have included Dolby SR/Dolby Digital/DTS/SDDS. The DVD
versions have Dolby Digital 5.1-channel sound.)

I seem to recall this as well.
In the case of a CP-200, the CAT280 cards fit (snugly) into the unit,
including the LeRe in the accessory rack. The format then would be 41.
we showed the "new" 70mm "2001" print a couple of times in the last
years. It's Todd-AO layout, each track Dolby SR. Quite unusual format,
but works fine with the CP200 as described already by Greg. |

The print we had at the 2001 Ebertfest was mag and the Todd-AO track layout
but with SR NR.
At a previous 2001 screening at that Champaign, IL venue (part of a
university thing called "Cyberfest") in 1997, we had a print, also mag,
that had tracks in the 5.1 layout (with SR NR). Not sure of the genesis of
that mix but I remember being told it was Kubrick approved so probably made
for a DVD release. That print was in circulation at the time as I believe
it went next to play at the Navy Pier IMAX theatre in Chicago, back when
Cineplex ran it and they had a JJ there for non 70/15 stuff. |

That's too bad to go 5.1 for theatrical release with these 6-track mixes. |
