is this movie worth getting? i haven't seen it yet. everything i read
says it's good, but the fictional opera bit seems silly, imo. i never
rent movies. i hate returning them, lol. if they interest me i buy them
and watch them a lot if i like them. or if i don't like them i watch
them once and never again, or give them away (as was the case with
"beyond silence". what a horrid, depressing movie)! so should i buy
"joyeux noel"? what do you say, yea or nay....? (btw, i DO like french
movies)! |

Haven't seen it, not planning to either, sorry. And I'm the opposite.
I hate to own things, renting movies used to be my favorite hobby
until the last independent video store around here went out of
business.
I see the writings on the wall -- I doubt even the big video rental
places
will survive (at least in their present form) much longer, so I
started
buying a lot more DVD. But when I buy something I don't like, such
as Resnais' _Not on the Lips_, there is absolutely no one to *give*
it away to. I can sell them used for peanuts, but I just end up
keeping
them and wishing I had a way to rent them instead (still resisting
netflix or the like ...)
This does bring up the marketplace of DVD's. I live in a mid-size
city which is not the mecca of cinema (NYC, LA, Chicago, or even
the 2nd echelon places in the U.S.). Most foreign fare don't show
up in theaters anymore. There is also a strange DVD lag time ...
video stores don't carry them for sale or rental for *months*, but if
you are patient and wait long enough they do show up. An example
is the Irene Jacob vehicle _Automne_, which was nowhere to be
found when first released but all of a sudden can be seen in every
video store in town! Why was there a 4 month delay? Who are the
suits that make decisions like this? Another example is Resnais'
_Private Fears in Public Places_, which finally shows up in one store
(among the new releases, not the new *foreign releases*, so I may
have missed it). Which leads to ...

I never considered it. Used to be because I wanted to support the
local independent video store. But I always like to browse for titles
on the shelf anyway. Rightly or wrongly, I consider excessive
shipping
wasteful of energy. |
