A real let-down after all the critical raves (in Cahiers,
NYT, and other places). A local critic compares it
to _Days of Heaven_ (due to some of the nature shots)
too -- not to this film's advantage. Well it's nothing like
Terrence Malick -- the characters are front and center,
unified with nature only in the most trivial and obvious
way. And it is a very mediocre film if you ask me.
There is just absolutely nothing in it. The lead actress
Marina Hands (sp?) has very limited range and is remarkably
awkward and uncomfortable-looking. The gamekeeper
character is of no interest all the way through -- until
the excellent end sequence, featuring a lengthy heart-to-
heart talk between the two protagonists and some serious
acting. It is an ending the rest of the film hardly deserves,
and has more illuminating words than the rest of the film
combined. I can't for the life of me figure out why this
is such an acclaimed film. It won 5 Cesars, so I should
have figured it must have been pretty bad. When is the
last time we saw a good Cesar-winning film? More to
the point, when is the last time we saw a great film from
France? The masterpieces are being made in Belgium
and Switzerland. Except Claire Denis', I suppose! Still
haven't had a chance to see the latest Resnais, which is
being boycotted not just by local theaters but by the
video store chains as well.
