There is a new Toshiba DVD player that allows you to play other region
dvd's with a trick (it looks pretty simple). Something about a
warning popping up on the screen saying the disk is from a different
region, you press CLEAR on the remote and the warning goes away.

Region is one thing, format is another.

There are, however, DVD players that purport to play PAL format disks
into NTSC TV sets. I'm not sure if that's true or just badly written ad
copy. I have one, a Daewoo, but haven't found a PAL disk to test it on.

No ad, just something I found looking for a better option for myself.
It's cheap enough, and according to everything I've read the PAL
conversion works very well. I've got a friend that has the Malata
system, it also works very well but was fairly expensive.

I bought the Daewoo (inexpensive at Costco) and returned it -- certainly
didn't live up to its specs.

I have used the Samsung, as well as the Samsung converting VHS machine,
and they do about as good a job as you will get from a home system. There
are pulldown artifacts, but they aren't awful ones. If your goal is to
watch all those porn movies you bought in Amsterdam, it's more than
serviceable. If you're looking to watch high grade transfers of Truffaut
films, you might be better off with a PAL or SECAM television.

I've said it before, I'll say it again.

Malata. the D558 is region free out of the box, and has absolutely no
problems with PAL-NTSC conversion.
