June 2007 (June 12, 2007)
A general guide to videos of Motion Picture Serials and related
materials.
---------
All THEATRICAL MOTION PICTURE SERIALS currently available on
commercial DVD
Sub-Total: 97 DVD Titles Known on COMMERCIAL DVD as of March 2007
Sub-Total: 155 Titles available on ALL FORMS of DVD (includes
DVD+/-R) as of JUNE 2007 (not including multiple variants of same
title since some titles are available in different qualities from
several distributors)
Approximately 232 Sound Serials are believed to have been made in
the United States.
Approximately 77 Sound Serials have yet to be issued on DVD in any
form, but some may be available on VHS or other formats.
=====================
JUNE 2007 - SPECIAL COMMENTS
a) For those who don't bother to read this entire document which IS
getting fairly long, it is helpful to note that the list is dependent
upon contributions mostly from readers of alt.binaries.serials. It is
not intended to be an academic research project. It IS intended to be
a convenience to collectors and hobbyists who are looking for a
favorite serial on DVD or other source. It is provided as a friendly
gesture by a small group of hobbyists to another group of hobbyists
and other interested parties. It is produced for fun and to encourage
joy and happiness. [Please note January 2007 SPECIAL COMMENTS, (c)
below].
-
b) NEW SECTION: Homage Serials. A new section of "homage serials" has
been added as SECTION 9 at the end of this list. An "homage serial"
is a non-professionally produced serial that has the spirit of the
classic sound serials of c.1929-c.1956. The classic example is
"Captain Celluloid and the Film Pirates" which was produced by a group
of hobbyists in and around New York City in the 1960s as a tribute to
Republic Serials. But there are others. Three have been noted. Please
feel free to post information about homage serials you may know of or
that you made yourself.
-
c) SOME SERIALS ON THIS LIST MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE ANY MORE. Some are
discontinued. As noted in the introduction, HD and BLURAY serials are
imminent. This means that many old versions will be discontinued and
new ones will be substituted. This happened with 35mm Film, 16mm Film,
8mm Film, BETA, VHS and Laserdisk and VCD. No Beta or Laserdisks are
currently sold new. However, DVD Is the format that one can find most
easily... at the moment.
................
MAY 2007 = SPECIAL COMMENTS
a) a new and short section of titles of serials known to be "missing"
from this list either because we're not aware of their being available
on DVD or because no one has issued them is started. It is section
number 8 in the Contents.
...................
JANUARY 2007 = SPECIAL COMMENTS
a) Some DVD-R titles are added in to the Alphabetical list at the end
of the listing by Distributor. As high-definition DVDs come into the
market, it is inevitable that some titles will be replaced by HD or
BluRay DVDs. However, many rare titles are only available on
low-quality (MPEG-1)DVD-R, DVD+R CD-R and CD+R. Common sense says that
these are better than nothing.
-
b) VHS - there are numerous rare serials -- especially Silent ones
that are available ONLY on VHS, a now technically defunct format. If
you have information on what is available, go to c) below.
-
c)Please post follow ups with additional information.

The USENET Newsgroup alt.binaries.multimedia.vintage-film often has
posts of DIVX or AVI or MPG versions of serials. There is no way to
predict what serial will be available on what date or for how long. If
your ISP carries this newsgroup, you must subscribe and take your
chances. Recent postings have included: Superman, Batman, Batman &
Robin, Jack Armstrong, Flash Gordon and more. A given title may be
availble on premium newsgroup servers for a month or more, but only
for a few days on smaller ISPs. This website has good basic
information on Newsgroups if you have no idea what we're talking
about. www.slyck.com/ng.php?page=1
------
The USENET Newsgroup alt.binaries.pictures.movie-posters sometimes has
postings of serial movie posters, lobby cards, stills and other
information. There is no reliable schedule for these occurrences. One
must monitor the group. Several different individuals supply these
posters, sometimes identical but with different file names.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All THEATRICAL MOTION PICTURE SERIALS currently available on
commercial DVD
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. I N T R O D U C T I O N
Unless otherwise noted, these are REGION 1 DVDs.
DVD+/-Rs are noted when that information is available. (DVD-R and
DVD+R information may not be available). These are NOT counted in the
total of "commercial" DVDs available.
Information on Region 2, 3, etc serial DVDs would be appreciated. Just
post it as a follow up.
Blu-Ray and HD-DVD titles are inevitable in 2007, but none are yet
available.
One website: www.archive.org is included for do-it-yourselfers who
want to make their own low-quality DVDs. The downloads are FREE.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. K E Y
--------
Quality is noted as: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, Excellent
(or some combination of the above)
Please note: Quality refers to the quality of the print/transfer on
the DVD.
It is not a critical judgment about whether it is a "good" serial or
not.
Others hereabouts will be glad to try to convince you that they alone
hold that knowledge.
--------------------
Date in parenthesis, e.g. (05/29/04) is the date the title was added
to this list.

SRP = Suggested Retail Price (Actual price at a store or online may
vary considerably!)

3. N O T E S
This list concerns itself with THEATRICAL MOTION PICTURE SERIALS.
It deliberately ignores Television Series, Soap Operas and other
TELEVISION forms.
There have been heated arguments about the DEFINITION of a serial.
There are many sources of such definitions, but clearly, the modern
motion picture cliffhanger "serial" starts with the likes of "The
Perils of Pauline" or "Fantomas." It evolved in many ways including
literature (most of Charles Dickens' books were published as "serials"
of one or more chapters per issue of a magazine), radio shows and the
modern television soap opera.
Star Wars was planned as a 9 part serial in 1974 and will end up as a
6 part serial in 2005. This is an "expanded definition" of a serial,
so this list concens itself exclusively with motion picture serials
which consisted of relatively "short" chapters (roughly 15-30 minutes)
that were shown week by week in movie theatres around the world. They
tend to have "continued next week" or "cliffhanger" endings where the
hero or heroine is in danger that must be resolved in the following
episode. The "golden ages" of serials were between _approximately_
1900-1928 and 1936-1950. The eagle-eyed amongst you and those who are
dying to have something to argue about will find exceptions.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. QUESTIONS TO ANSWER:
With the exception of Judex, Fantomas, Les Vampyrs, few "foreign"
(that is non-United States) serials are well-known.
There MUST have been serials made in the UK and certainly more made in
France than the ones mentioned. How about Germany? Sweden?
What are they?
5. Special Thanks to:

The Serial Squadron (DVD-R)As of 2007 some titles are true DVD.
http://www.serialsquadron.com/index.html
-------------------------------------------
Note 1: DVD-R: Not technically "commercial" DVDs, but often
of high quality and relatively easy and less expensive to purchase.
They do require a special DVD player, since not all commerical players
will decode DVD-R or DVD+R.
--
Note 2: Warning! Serial Squadron has been known to "tamper" with
serials by adding color and other features that were not in the
original release.
There seems to be no justification for this, except that the guy who
runs Serial Squadron seems to think that it is cool, so "caveat
emptor.")
If the serials were released in TWO versions it would be more
acceptible:
a) original, unaltered version
b) inauthentic new version with whatever nonsense Serial Squadron
feels like adding.
Buyers would then have a choice.
--
Note 3: Serial Squadron often solicits donations from the public to
do "restoration" work, but has failed to deliver these in a timely
fashion. There is much controversy around this practice, so be aware
that if you contribute you may not receive the serial for a long time.
--
Note 4 (6/2007) Apparently many Serial Squadron releases have bonus
material like commentaries, bios, trailers, etc.
--
Note 5 (6/2007) Several titles are now available as true DVDs. They
are noted when the information is available.
--------------------
Adventures of Captain Marvel, 1941, Republic - Warning! The color
effects on this serial are NOT authentic. 06/2007 - This serial is
not currently available for immediate purchase from Serial Squadron.
Apparenly only ONE chapter was tinted as an "extra."
Adventures of Tarzan, 1921, 10 Chapters (Silent Serial) Warning! The
color effects on this serial are NOT authentic.
Beatrice Fairfax - 1916 - Warning! The color effects on this serial
are NOT authentic.
Fighting Marines, The - - - (6/2007)
FLAMING FRONTIERS (1937) Universal - DVD-R
Flash Gordon - 1937 - Warning! The color effects on this serial are
NOT authentic. Apparently, this is the FEATURE VERSION of the serial
including a commentary by "Ace Drummon," a Serial Squadron Member
(6/2007)
GANG BUSTERS (1942) Universal/13 ch./ - DVD-R
Holt of the Secret Service
King of the Mounties, Volume 1 - Chaps 1-5 (6/2007)
Lone Ranger Rides Again, The - "Subtitle free, with chapters
reconstructed and all notes/signs in English. Includes commentary
from Serial Squadron members (including DarkAvenger1989)"
Lost City of the Jungle - 1946 - - Chapters
Lost City of the African Jungle - 1920 - Silent Serial - 4 Chapter
"condensation" is titled "The Jungle Princess" - much of this serial
is currently "lost." This version "reconstructs" the story. Apparently
colored to approximate original tinting/toning. (07/01/05)
Lost Serial Collection, The - --Chapters and clips from various silent
serials that do not exist in whole. (6/2007)
The Masked Rider, 1919, 15 Chapters (Silent) - Color tinting/toning
appears to have been reproduced from an original, tinted/toned nitrate

please post them and they'll be added to the list.

following title in this alphabetical listing. The information will be
incomplete for a long time!
NOTE 2: December 2006 beginning to add DVD-R ONLY titles to this list.
They will be tabulated as a separate total. They are clearly marked as
DVD-R ONLY meaning either DVD-R or DVD+R to save space.
NOTE 3 December 2006 - when a serial is available on both Commercial

all, why purchase an inferior version. The only exception to this
would be factual information that a DVD+/-R is superior to an existing
commercial version)

Captain Celluloid and the Film Pirates
The Dangers of Deborah - 10 Chapters - 2007 (in progress)
King of the Park Rangers - 12 Chapters - 2001 (?)
Just to deal with this section for a moment.
CAPTAIN CELLULOID VS. THE FILM PIRATES is a 4 chapter b&w silent
serial shot on Super 8 back in 1965. Grapevine Video carries it on
DVD-R.
MONARCH OF THE MOON technically belongs here. 6 15 minute chapters in
both color and black and white versions. Made by Dark Horse Indie
Films in 2005 and released by Image Entertainment on DVD in December,
2006.
KING OF THE PARK RANGERS is 12 chapters, black and white (originally
released sepia) and is currently unavailable. It is getting a re-edit
and will be re-issued on DVD-R later this year.
DANGERS OF DEBORAH is currently filming, will be 10 black and white
chapters, and will be released on DVD-R later this year also.
In addition, there is a 3 chapter homage up on Youtube known as THE
SCARLET AVENGER. Each chapter runs about 5 minutes and, in fact, the
whole thing runs about 20 minutes total. |

Yikes! I finally got a review copy of AC Comics' THE SECRET CODE.
You're gonna wanna avoid this one.
I'll get a full review up at www.inthebalcony.com when I can, but for
now be advised that due to time and disc space constraints, AC Comics
was forced to actually separate the "secret decoding" segments from
chapters 2-14 and place them as an EXTRA on disc two. Without chapter
stops. Which means, oh, when you watch chapter five it ends with the
peril and no decoding or closing credits. The decoding segments are
all lumped together, so you have to watch them all together (they
don't have chapter stops, so in other words if you JUST want to watch
the decoding segment from chapter 5, you have to wade through the
earlier decoding segments). It's a shame, because the serial itself
looks terrific.
I empathize with Mr. Black's time and disc constraints, but that is no
way to watch THE SECRET CODE, and I suggest you avoid this DVD. Even
if it DOES have a featurette on the life of Paul Kelly written by moi. |
