May 2007
All THEATRICAL MOTION PICTURE SERIALS currently available on
commercial DVD
Sub-Total: 97 DVD Titles Known on COMMERCIAL DVD as of March 2007
Sub-Total: 155 Titles available on ALL FORMS of DVD (includes
DVD+/-R) as of March 2007 (not including multiple variants of same
title since some titles are available in different qualities from
several distributors)
Approximately 232 Sound Serials are believed to have been made in
the United States.
Approximately 77 Sound Serials have yet to be issued on DVD in any
form, but some may be available on VHS or other formats.
MAY 2007 = SPECIAL COMMENTS
a) a new and short section of titles of serials known to be "missing"
from this list either because we're not aware of their being available
on DVD or because no one has issued them is started. It is section
number 8 in the Contents.
JANUARY 2007 = SPECIAL COMMENTS
a) Some DVD-R titles are added in to the Alphabetical list at the end
of the listing by Distributor. As high-definition DVDs come into the
market, it is inevitable that some titles will be replaced by HD or
BluRay DVDs. However, many rare titles are only available on
low-quality (MPEG-1)DVD-R, DVD+R CD-R and CD+R. Common sense says that
these are better than nothing.
b) VHS - there are numerous rare serials -- especially Silent ones
that are available ONLY on VHS, a now technically defunct format. If
you have information on what is available, go to c) below.
c)Please post follow ups with additional information.

The USENET Newsgroup alt.binaries.multimedia.vintage-film often has
posts of DIVX or AVI or MPG versions of serials. There is no way to
predict what serial will be available on what date or for how long. If
your ISP carries this newsgroup, you must subscribe and take your
chances. Recent postings have included: Superman, Batman, Batman &
Robin, Jack Armstrong, Flash Gordon and more. A given title may be
availble on premium newsgroup servers for a month or more, but only
for a few days on smaller ISPs. This website has good basic
information on Newsgroups if you have no idea what we're talking
about. www.slyck.com/ng.php?page=1

1. I N T R O D U C T I O N
Unless otherwise noted, these are REGION 1 DVDs.
DVD+/-Rs are noted when that information is available. (DVD-R and
DVD+R information may not be available). These are NOT counted in the
total of "commercial" DVDs available.
Information on Region 2, 3, etc serial DVDs would be appreciated. Just
post it as a follow up.
Blu-Ray and HD-DVD titles are inevitable in 2007, but none are yet
available.
One website: www.archive.org is included for do-it-yourselfers who
want to make their own low-quality DVDs. The downloads are FREE.

2. K E Y
--------
Quality is noted as: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, Excellent
(or some combination of the above)
Please note: Quality refers to the quality of the print/transfer on
the DVD.
It is not a critical judgment about whether it is a "good" serial or
not.
Others hereabouts will be glad to try to convince you that they alone
hold that knowledge.
--------------------
Date in parenthesis, e.g. (05/29/04) is the date the title was added
to this list.

SRP = Suggested Retail Price (Actual price at a store or online may
vary considerably!)

3. N O T E S
This list concerns itself with THEATRICAL MOTION PICTURE SERIALS.
It deliberately ignores Television Series, Soap Operas and other
TELEVISION forms.
There have been heated arguments about the DEFINITION of a serial.
There are many sources of such definitions, but clearly, the modern
motion picture cliffhanger "serial" starts with the likes of "The
Perils of Pauline" or "Fantomas." It evolved in many ways including
literature (most of Charles Dickens' books were published as "serials"
of one or more chapters per issue of a magazine), radio shows and the
modern television soap opera.
Star Wars was planned as a 9 part serial in 1974 and will end up as a
6 part serial in 2005. This is an "expanded definition" of a serial,
so this list concens itself exclusively with motion picture serials
which consisted of relatively "short" chapters (roughly 15-30 minutes)
that were shown week by week in movie theatres around the world. They
tend to have "continued next week" or "cliffhanger" endings where the
hero or heroine is in danger that must be resolved in the following
episode. The "golden ages" of serials were between _approximately_
1900-1928 and 1936-1950. The eagle-eyed amongst you and those who are
dying to have something to argue about will find exceptions.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. QUESTIONS TO ANSWER:
With the exception of Judex, Fantomas, Les Vampyrs, few "foreign"
(that is non-United States) serials are well-known.
There MUST have been serials made in the UK and certainly more made in
France than the ones mentioned. How about Germany? Sweden?
What are they?
5. Special Thanks to:

And individually: Laughing Gravy, Grooooovey Moooooovey, wolfagain,
Silent-Music, and others.
If you think we left you out, just post and we will include you in.

-------------------------------------------
Note 1: DVD-R: Not technically "commercial" DVDs, but often
of high quality and relatively easy and less expensive to purchase.
They do require a special DVD player,
since not all commerical players will decode DVD-R or DVD+R.
Note 2: Warning! Serial Squadron has been known to "tamper" with
serials
by adding color and other features that were not in the original
release.
There seems to be no justification for this,
except that the guy who runs Serial Squadron
seems to think that it is cool, so "caveat emptor.")
If the serials were released in TWO versions it would be more
acceptible:
a) original, unaltered version
b) inauthentic new version with whatever nonsense Serial Squadron
feels like adding.
Buyers would then have a choice.
Note 3: Serial Squadron often solicits donations from the public to
do "restoration" work, but has failed to deliver these in a timely
fashion. There is much controversy around this practice, so be aware
that if you contribute you may not receive the serial for a long time.
--------------------
Adventures of Captain Marvel, 1941, Republic - Warning! The color
effects on this serial are NOT authentic.
Adventures of Tarzan, 1921, 10 Chapters (Silent Serial) Warning! The
color effects on this serial are NOT authentic.
Beatrice Fairfax - 1916 - Warning! The color effects on this serial
are NOT authentic.
FLAMING FRONTIERS (1937) Universal - DVD-R
Flash Gordon - 1937 - Warning! The color effects on this serial are
NOT authentic.
GANG BUSTERS (1942) Universal/13 ch./ - DVD-R
Holt of the Secret Service
Lost City of the African Jungle - 1920 - Silent Serial - 4 Chapter
"condensation" is titled "The Jungle Princess" - much of this serial
is currently "lost." This version "reconstructs" the story. Apparently
colored to approximate original tinting/toning. (07/01/05)
The Masked Rider, 1919, 15 Chapters (Silent) - Color tinting/toning
appears to have been reproduced from an original, tinted/toned nitrate
print. Not all chapters are complete, but this seems to be the only
known print.
The Master Key, Universal 1945 / 13 Chapters
The Mystery of the Riverboat - Universal - 194 - Chapters
The Painted Stallion
The Phantom Empire (1935) Mascot/12 ch./ (Warning! also has color
tinting, added music, and "color effects")
Tailspin Tommy in the Great Air Mystery (07/01/05)
The Vanishing Legion (07/01/05) - Warning! This serial has been
censored. A scene offensive to the proprietor of Serial Squadron has
been removed and included as an extra. The main credits have also been
altered. Note 1: 03-16-06 A second version of this serial is
announced which has three separate versions of the controversial
sequence: Complete, censored, with commentary. Be sure to request
that version if this is important to you.

7. SECTION 7 - Listing by TITLE only - Alphabetical - 154 Titles
(03-03-07)
Most of these titles are available from more than one distributor on
the list above.
If someone would like to suggest the BEST VERSION of each of these,
please post them and they'll be added to the list.
(NOTE: December 2006 - beginning to add multiple distributors
following title in this alphabetical listing. The information will be
incomplete for a long time!
NOTE 2: December 2006 beginning to add DVD-R ONLY titles to this list.
They will be tabulated as a separate total. They are clearly marked as
DVD-R ONLY meaning either DVD-R or DVD+R to save space.
NOTE 3 December 2006 - when a serial is available on both Commercial
DVD and DVD+/-R, ONLY the commercial DVD source will be listed. After
all, why purchase an inferior version. The only exception to this
would be factual information that a DVD+/-R is superior to an existing
commercial version)

Thank you as always for your hard work!
One note: Restored Serials' HOUDINI: MAN FROM BEYOND is a feature
film, not a serial, although one of the bonuses on the disc is a full
35-page script synopsis of the 1919 Houdini serial THE MASTER MYSTERY.
If you want a look at MAN FROM BEYOND and the brand new, restored
GREEN ARCHER, I invite you to visit the Serial Box at www.inthebalcony.com.

Left off the list--possibly deliberately.
Quote: From Alpha-- THE HURRICANE EXPRESS (first released last year)
From Image--MONARCH OF THE MOON--Brand new 6 chapter serial/spoof.
Not the greatest, but it still counts! Comes in color and black and
white versions.
Quote: From the Serial Squadron:
KING OF THE MOUNTIES VOL. 1--The first 5 chapters. Vol. 2 is supposed
to be forthcoming.
THE LONE RANGER RIDES AGAIN--Subtitle free, with chapters
reconstructed and all notes/signs in English. Includes commentary
from Serial Squadron members (including yours truly)
THE LOST SERIAL COLLECTION--Chapters and clips from various silent
serials that do not exist in whole.
SIGN OF THE WOLF--Best copy of this serial available. No idea why
this one was ignored.
ZORRO RIDES AGAIN--Again, no idea why this one was ignored.
A couple additional notes re: Squadron releases:
FLASH GORDON is not available. It's the feature version, ROCKET
SHIP. Includes a commentary from one of the Squadron members, Ace
Drummond.
THE VANISHING LEGION is NOT censored. There is one and only one
version of the serial available now, which includes chapter one with
and without the kissing scene. So the need for a WARNING! is not
there...it's simply a case of Much Ado About Nothing.
ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN MARVEL is not available--nor has it been for a
long time. And btw, when it was available, only one chapter was
tinted--as a bonus. But the whole thing was there otherwise.
Almost all of the Squadron releases have bonus material, including
aforementioned commentaries (HOLT, ROCKET SHIP, VANISHING LEGION, and
THE LONE RANGER RIDES AGAIN), cast bios, trailers, etc.
TAILSPIN TOMMY IN THE GREAT AIR MYSTERY, MYSTERY OF THE RIVER BOAT,
and ZORRO'S FIGHTING LEGION are true DVD--not DVD-R.

The suggested information has been noted and added for the next update
of the list.
The list is maintained without any purpose other than information. It
is intended to be reference work for historical research and ease in
purchasing.
Missing information simply means that the information was not
available to the compilers at the time the list was posted.
Anyone reading the list carefully will note that a sincere and open
request for additions and corrections to the list appears each and
every time. There is a perpetual list of questions especially about
foreign serials, alternate versions, region coded versions, etc. that
no one ever answers. Perhaps the Serial Squadron can begin to supply
that information as well as information about their own releases.
It is also helpful to remember that serials are often purchased second
hand or "used." In the case of the censored version of "The Vanishing
Legion," if anyone can supply proof that all released copies of that
version have been recalled and destroyed, we'd be pleased to remove
the "caveat" along with an explanation of how the censored disks were
recalled and destroyed. However, this is intended as an historically
accurate reference list, and it would be useful to know that there are
two and possibly three different release versions of the Serial
Squadron "Vanishing Legion." Some collectors might want to purchase
BOTH versions for the sake of completeness.
Anyone with additions and corrections to the list other than those
relating to "taste" are sincerely requested to post them as a followup
each time the updated listing is made available.
Thank you!
Serial Murmerer and others.

I'm fairly certain I've seen this list elsewhere with it's caveats,
and you're not the one who has originated it. You simply copy ad
infinitum the list and toss in on occassion when a new item is
mentioned. However, you clearly have not done your homework on this
list. The listing of Captain Marvel from the Serial Squadron is a
very clear example.
And the information was very much available. All one had to do was go
to Alpha and type in serials and viola--THE HURRICANE EXPRESS. I have
to take a closer look at your Alpha list, but I'm pretty certain
you're missing other titles they've released. Same thing with the
Serial Squadron.
A complete list should be just that...complete.

While I'm here, I might point out other titles you've missed.
For instance, Sinister Cinema has quite a few titles available,
including the best copy of KING OF THE WILD you'll ever see.
Other Serial Squadron titles you chose to ignore:
THE FIGHTING MARINES
LOST CITY OF THE JUNGLE
RADIO PATROL
RUSTLERS OF RED DOG
I'm sure I'll find quite a number of other titles that were ignored.
I haven't gone over your Alpha listing with a fine tooth comb, but I'm
pretty sure you're missing quite a few titles there as well.

Hello, again.
You are quite correct. Alpha was not gone over with a "fine tooth
comb."
NOTHING is gone over online in particular with a fine tooth comb.
This list depends upon people like you who are kind enough to post
additions.
Nothing has been "ignored." Overlooked, perhaps, by the people who
normally post here.
It's just that no one bothered to post it here before and that is the
source of most of the information added to the list by the several
people who keep it up.
Please feel free to post any other additions that you are aware of.
I don't own many of the disks in the list and have no way of knowing
the "quality" of the transfers except when people supply them.

Question:
Is LOST CITY OF THE JUNGLE the same as or different from
Lost City of the African Jungle - 1920 - Silent Serial - 4 Chapter
"condensation" is titled "The Jungle Princess" - much of this serial
is currently "lost." This version "reconstructs" the story. Apparently
colored to approximate original tinting/toning. (07/01/05)
Thanks.

RUSTLERS OF RED DOG
I'm sure I'll find quite a number of other titles that were ignored.
I haven't gone over your Alpha listing with a fine tooth comb, but I'm
pretty sure you're missing quite a few titles there as well.

And the information was very much available. All one had to do was go

Serial Squadron.
A complete list should be just that...complete.

The list is maintained without any purpose other than information. It
is intended to be reference work for historical research and ease in

Thank you!

LOST CITY OF THE AFRICAN JUNGLE is retitled THE JUNGLE PRINCESS.
LOST CITY OF THE JUNGLE is Lionel Atwill's last serial, circa 1946.

No, the people who fed you this information are well aware that it is
incorrect and that titles were ignored. For what reason, I won't even
begin to guess.

Don't worry. I will. By the end of the week, I will have the
complete lists for Alpha, Sinister Cinema (exactly WHY they don't rate
listings on your list but bootleggers do goes beyond me), and the
Serial Squadron.
Quote: I don't own many of the disks in the list and have no way of knowing

Then perhaps you should remove the "quality" rankings. As it is, only
titles from certain companies get rankings while titles from other
companies do not. Of course, you could also do some research and get
some of these titles for yourself so that you could rank them. Again,
that comes under the heading of research.
And before the usual crowd chimes in, for once I am not merely coming
to the defense of the Squadron. The appalling omissions from other
companies as well as the Squadron while bootleggers get very detailed
listings blows my mind. In particular, the blowing off of Sinister
Cinema amazes me. The SC DVD-R of KING OF THE WILD is well documented
on certain sites as The best print--hell about the only viewable
print--of that serial ever. It's continued omission from this list
makes me wonder what game the compilers are playing. Do they only
bother to list companies/people that send them freebies and to hell
with anybody else? Or is it just plain laziness? Either way, it's
not good. Not one bit. |

You can't please all of the people all of the time.
Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

No one has ever sent me any freebies of anything! LOL
Want to send me some?
I don't even own all of these and probably never will.
This is not a business, it's just for fun and the few (other) people
(besides you, apparently) who feel the same way.
We're all looking forward to the book you should write and publish. It
will be great, I'm sure. No one is stopping you from doing it. Try
MacFarland (sp?) They publish books like that and I don't think anyone
has ever done one on serials. |

Ah...deflections and cop-outs! Gotta love it. Again I say, a list
that is supposed to be about ALL SERIALS CURRENTLY ON DVD should be
about ALL SERIALS CURRENTLY ON DVD--not just the ones you feel are
worth mentioning.
Incidentally, though I have given consideration from time to time
about writing just such a book on serials, I feel that others (Leonard
Kohl, R.W. Stedman, Ken Weiss) have covered that territory better than
I potentially could. Besides, being the only guy to have made a 12
chapter serial since the 1950s (and currently duplicating that feat
with a 10 chapter serial) is quite enough of an accomplishment in the
field for me. |
