I already have the MK41 would the mk4 be too wide or woyld it be
suitable for some locations. I was looking at the ;lack of rear lobe
in a cardoid.

Thanks

I like the MK4 for car shots or where the mic can be very close like a head
shot interview where it is more forgiving of head movement. You have to
remember that with the wider patern you get less reach and a little more
gain will be needed which will bring up the background noise a little. It is
a nice capsule but the MK41 is the workhorse. The MK41 also has a slightly
more linear off axis response than the MK4.

It works fine in some situations, paricularly close-ups with a noisy camera.
Point the null at the camera and venture forth. It tends to get pretty wide
pretty quick though, and probably NG for your master shot. It depends on how
quiet/reverberant the room is too.

Bryan,

I think "too wide" depends upon how noisy your location is and/or how
wide your shot is. I've found the MK4 (or two) is a very useful tool
in my kit, however. Common uses are actors standing somewhat apart
from one another and overlapping their dialogue in the same frame (on
a show when I only have one boom operator), and plant situations where
people are likely to move to and fro out of the range of a 41 but not
quite out of the range of a 4.

As you note, the absence of a rear lobe can be useful at times too,
particularly in echoey locations or when there are unstoppable fans or
ducts overhead, although sometimes you have to pick your poison with
what the increased width that the pickup pattern brings in.
