I can't honestly say I love _Last Year at Marienbad_ --
it is at once too surreal and dreamlike, and at the
same time cold and intellectual, for my taste. Nor do I
even understand much of it. But this can easily be
the most brilliant piece of cinema I've seen. The
editing, the tracking shots (the early Resnais are
so good at those), the compositions, the B&W
cinematography, the set design, are out of this
world. But especially the editing. Goodness.
It is so easy to find influences of this film on some
of my all-time favorites (which move me both
intellectually and emotionall): _Ashes of Time_
(Brigitte Lin's mad yells, the rapid editing suggesting
confusion of time and place), _In the Mood for
Love_ (tracking shots along the corridors and
in the ruins of Cambodia, Tony Leung and Maggie
Cheung frozen in time, still as statues), Contempt
(statues), _Nouvelle Vague_ (narrative -- or non-narrative
-- strategy) ... technically this film is on DVD, but
is currently out of print. And Fox-Lorber DVD's are
pretty worthless anyway. Time for someone to
work on it ... I still can't quite believe what I've
just seen on this pristine widescreen VHS tape,
even though I've seen the film at least twice
before.
I have one last visit to my favorite video store. Hope
I can get my hands on _La Guerre est Finie_,
_Thieves_, _A Man Escaped_, maybe _Katzelmacher_ ... |
