I've recently obtained an Elmo ST-600. Seems a bit noisy but throws a
good image. The problem is the nasty warbling sound playback. Holding
the loop restore lever at 11 o'clock alleviates the condition but is not
exactly an ideal solution.
A look under the hood shows suspicious behaviour in the tensioning
mechanism just to the upper right of the playback heads. There's a
spring which catches on a metal guide but freeing it manually doesn't
help matters. Maybe a part is missing or one or more springs worn out,
who knows?
In case someone with a healthy ST-600, or knowledge of same, happens to
find this message I've placed a pic of the suspect area on the web at:
http://www.booman.ukonline.co.uk/trouble.jpg
The pic will stay up indefinitely and I'll post again if/when the
problem is solved. Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Perusing scavenged pics of assorted Elmos for sale on eBay I've
ascertained that the thing with the spring should flip all the way round
clockwise. Sound much improved though still with a slight taint of
vibrato. Time for some trial and error with a screwdriver I suppose...
