Does anyone remember (or know) something about a 60s british film
called "Alfred the great"? It was a historical and war movie directed
by Clive Donner and starring David Hemmings, Michael York, Prunella
Ransome and Colin Blakely.

If you know something about it please answer.
Did you like it? What impression did you get about the performances?
And what about the battle scenes? ...

B movie, amateurish, rotten film stock...

Not their best effort...

Not too bad, the winter battle on the frozen river was quite
picturesque... Has been copied...

Not to be too negative, they got some of the armour right, spectacle
helmets and the like. I don't recall any horned helmets though there may
have been some... The homesteads were pretty good...

-it's been on TV a couple of times in the last few years usually in
the afternoon. It's ok and David Hemmings is good as the king but it's
not very exciting or memorable-my recollections of it are that there's
a lot more talking than fighting in it,it depicts medieval Britain as
a fairly grim and gloomy place, the battles are scrappy and fought out
in a damp and drab landscape(maybe not too far from the truth)and
there are no spectacular sets or huge battle scenes like you would
expect to see in films of today.Worth watching once though.

I saw Alfred the Great two years ago on tv. It is a long film, up to 2
hours.
Itīs an OK film, to say the best, not one of Clive Donnerīs best
films.

Battle scenes are good, Iīve always read in the web thatīs the most
interesting and well-done part of Alfred the Great. It may be, but at
least itīs not my favourite. I found much more entertaining the scene
where Alfred (David Hemmings) makes his dog attack princess Aelhswith
(Prunella Ransome). I also liked the scene where Guthrum (Michael
York) told Alfred and Aelhswith he had more than twenty wifes while
they were playing chess. However, once that conversation ends it is
quite predictable whatīs going to happen next with Aelshwith. I found
it interesting to see how a king had to let her wife go with the enemy
not to start a war. Some may say <oh, poor woman...> but the funniest
is about to come: Aelswith seems to forget about his husband because
she doesnīt suffer much being with Guthrum...

The acting is excellent, D.Hemmings and M.York are perfect in their
roles. Colin Blakely appears in very few scenes. No one has mentioned
before but Sir Ian McKellen gives another good performance as the
bandit. There are few women in the film. Prunella Ransome is also
excellent as the lovely princess/queen. Aelhswithīs servant Edith
(Sinead Cusack) has something like 2 words to say in all the film and
the banditīs wife (Vivien Merchant) doesnīt open the mouth. You know,
women in historical films...

Alfred the Great is not bad, but itīs just entertainment, itīs not a
grandious story told there.
