Just saw "Introducing Dorothy Dandridge" with Halle Berry. Not bad. I can't
believe I still haven't seen "Carmen Jones"....

So why did her voice get dubbed in that, and why was there no mention of the
lawyer who ripped her off big time - namely, Rosenthal, who also ripped off
Doris Day for years with her dumb third husband's compliance? (Day later got a
huge settlement in the 1970s - 22 million, the highest ever in CA for that sort
of case, though I don't think she got all of it.) Anyway, according to Day's
bio, "(Dandridge) had no money to sue Rosenthal with, and very soon afterwards
she committed suicide."

So what's the verdict on Dandridge after all these years? Suicide or embolism?

I think there was a disagreement over the music in Carmen Jones so
the film was pulled. That must have been after a few years as I
saw it as a child at least twice in England. I could be wrong
about which film had the difficulties as it could've been Porgy &
Bess.

So why did her voice get dubbed in that,

I asked this last year and it seems that she didn't have an
operatic-type voice to suit, which is fair enough. On my record of
Carmen Jones it would seem a Marilynn Horne sang vocals. Did
Marilynn become Lena ?

Richard.

Marilyn Horne went on to become one of the greatest operatic mezzo
sopranos of the 20th century.

Harry Belafonte's singing voice was dubbed also - by LeVern
Hutcherson. I'm not an opera buff but I don't think I'd ever heard of
him before or after. I understand he was in Porgy and Bess on Broadway
but that's about all I could find out about him.

Dave in Toronto

I found the LP at a car boot sale for about 50 pence and have yet to play
it! Just about all the cast are dubbed by singers, as stated in the
following paragraph.

"The voices of Marilynn Horne, LeVern Hutcherson, Marvin Hayes, Bernice
Peterson, Broc Peters and Joe Crawford are heard in the singing roles of
Carmen, Joe, Husky, Myrt, Rum and Dink, respectively."

Maybe their voices might have resembled (to coin a phrase by an announcer
today) "a zoo burning down." Just kidding!
