Silent Film Gala Spotlights Keaton's 'Steamboat'
Thu, Apr 08, 2004, 09:04 AM PT
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Dustin Hoffman will present Buster Keaton's 1928
classic comedy "Steamboat Bill, Jr.," which will be accompanied by the Los
Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) as part of the annual Silent Film Gala in June.
In "Steamboat," Keaton gives one of his most memorable performances as a son who
needs to be toughened up by his rough-and-tumble steamboat captain father. The
film features numerous physically comic scenes, including a tangle with a
cyclone and the iconic stunt in which Keaton barely escapes being crushed by a
falling wall.
The film inspired "Steamboat Willie," the Disney short film featuring Mickey
Mouse's first appearance the same year. Preceding the Keaton film will be a
different Mickey Mouse film, "Plane Crazy" in which the titular mouse attempts
to impress Minnie with his flying skills.
Musical accompaniment will be under the direction of composer/conductor Timothy
Brock, who wrote an all-new musical score for "Steamboat Bill, Jr."
The event marks the fourth time that Hoffman has acted as its Honorary Chairman.
He has attended the event for almost ten years with his family.
"Watching a classic silent film accompanied by the outstanding Los Angeles
Chamber Orchestra ... is seeing a film perhaps in its purest form," says
Hoffman. "You're watching a movie in a concert hall environment -- it doesn't
get any better than that."
Past gala supporters include Pierce Brosnan, Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Norman
Jewison, Eddie Murphy, Paul Newman, Victoria Principal, Rob Reiner, Martin
Scorsese, Barbra Streisand, among many others, as well as independent production
companies, major studios and film-restoration laboratories. The Silent Film Gala
began in 1990.
This year's gala will take place at UCLA's Royce Hall on Saturday, June 5. For
more information, visit the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra's website at
www.laco.org.
