With the new Devas about to come out, there's been talk of using the
II's as a backup machine or for additional recorders. Because the disk
and file formats are different than the new Devas, I know the new ones
have been designed to be able to play the older units disks. Can they
also import from those disks? It would be great to be able to use my old
II for effects or second unit, and then import the material into the
archive for the show, as well as sending post, transfer, and telecine
files in the same file format (perhaps .ZAX) and drive format.
This also seems good to be able to store the material in the new
condensed files. With the solid-state drive holding 36 gigs, and 3:1
compression, I think it should be possible to store an entire feature of
any length on the main drive. (My current features end up being about 50
gigs in 24-bit).
Any information out about this?

I have been thinking about exactly the same thing Peter, and I would love to
hear from anyone who has figured this out. Just as you have said, there will
be times when I would like to take the old Deva and do some recording off
the cart possibly, but would like to easily have that material end up on the
new Deva (and its daily workflow routine) just as if it had been recorded on
the main Deva. This routine, if possible and easy, would also be useful for
people using other non-linear machines to compliment the main machine (like
a Sound Devices 7 series recorder used "over the shoulder" for some quick
scene).
Any thoughts on this from Zaxcom would be appreciated.

What's wrong with AES out/in with ext TC? Sure, you have to hit PLAY and REC,
but it works. Maybe you could do a "Play all" from the II and go to lunch...?

Yes, that would work, but it wouldn't allow individual files to be made
from the tracks, nor would it preserve metadata. The other significant
disadvantage is real-time transfer, vs. 2x to 4x assuming the slowest
DVD-RAM drive.
But that is the technique I've used when separately recording effects on
a DAT (which has no metadata or high-speed capability). Even then, I
usually start and stop the Deva to separate tracks and I put in the
metadata from the Cameo. It's a little tedious but appreciated in post.
It would be good to be able to take advantage of the great features of
Deva II in a Deva 4/5 environment.

I think what Peter was aiming at is some file copy/transfer routine rather
than a real time play out of digital audio. I am beginning to think this may
not be possible with old Deva II since the only viable connection for file
transfers from this 5 year old device is via SCSI (other than the above
mention of AES for transfer of audio, not files).

The new Devas will play disks from the Deva II. It will be possible to
plug the Deva II disk into the Deva IV or V and burn DVDs from the
disk as if they were recorded in the new Deva. How the files will
appear on the DVD only Howy can explain. We did this to continue to
add value to the existing Deva II.

I am pleased to hear that this will be possible. What I personally would
like to see, if it were possible, would be a docking station type carrier
that accepts the hard drive used in the Deva II, in its Deva II case, and
connects to the new Deva via Firewire. I would be willing to pay for such a
device which would not only provide continued usefulness for my older Deva,
it would be a better fit for the workflow and procedures that I imagine with
the new Deva.

The new devas are already playing back old Deva2 disks. So you will be
able to mirror off the audio from your Deva2 disk into any format
that tha Deva5 supports, (ZAX,BWF,SD2 etc).

I'm thinking about a dedicated car rig setup for running shots. Perfect
for the DEVA II.
