I'm thinking if there's one movie I must see this year, it would have
to be Mel Gibson's new movie, "The Passion of the Christ". That guy is a
genius! From what I read, it seems to be the goriest movie ever, packaged
in the form of a religious statement.

I remember reading all the forms of torture (wood-thorned hat, back
whipped til skin is gone, nailed to cross, what else?) that Jesus goes
through to atone for the sins of mankind & give us everlasting life.

Has anyone seen it yet? Are you a religious person, and what do you
think of the movie?

Yes, it is the greatest movie I have ever seen. It has been almost a week
since I have seen it, and I am still feeling it. It is not a happy film,
but it has a lot of effect, that lasts.

You're right, it is about the atonement. Yes, I deify Jesus, (especially
so, now) and yes, awareness and trust in the atonement is what saves people.

It could make people feel that way.

I am a Christian but I did not like the film for the following reasons:

1) I really don't mind an entire movie devoted to the Passion, but what
is the point of showing the Passion if you then virtually ignore the
Resurrection?

2) What's the point of showing the Passion in all of its minute and most
gory details?

3) The first scene that depicted Jesus' arrest looked like something out
of a kung-fu movie. I was only waiting for Peter to throw a drop kick on
somebody.

4) The sound effect used to accompany the moving of the stone in front of
the tomb was the same sound effect used for the tornado in Twister.

5) All the thirty-second calm and serene flashbacks that were thrown in
between the explicit gore (at every opportunity) became more of a
distortion and annoyance than anything else.

6) All the five second, slow-motion sequencing of various close-up shots
also distorted (for me) the narrative as a whole.

7) Pontius Pilate looked (to me) like he was about twenty-three years
old and Herod looked even younger.

What I did like about the film was the use of the Aramaic. I thought it was
well done and I liked how it sounded.

I wonder if he's got the guts to do the sequel?

At 200 mil and counting you can expect a whole slew of sadomasochistic
religious flicks. Wait til they BBQ Joan of Arc.
