Conditions: The scene must be [1] unforgettable, [2] of artistic or
other merit (i.e., not merely shocking), [3] unlikely to be topped, if
even repeated, anytime soon, and, especially, [4] often the reason you
bother watching the film again.
My picks:
1. Jupiter's implosion into a star, with attending solar-wind shockwave,
in "2010". Way, way cool. (The "genesis" explosion at the end of "Star
Trek II: The Wrath of Khan", a more enjoyable and better overall film,
is by contrast a very lame piece of special effects.)
2. The wreckless chariot race/duel down the hillside in "The Decline and
Fall of the Roman Empire".
3. The parting of the Red Sea is the showpiece, of course, but the
plagues in "The Ten Commandments", especially the fire-hail and the
Angel of Death, were incredible in their own right.
4. The "Night-Rider" chase which opens the first "Mad Max" movie.
5. Tetsuo on a telekenetic rampage in "Akira". (You'd think that in
twenty years, in all the times cities have been trashed in anime films,
that they'd be able to top "Akira"....but nothing's even close.)
6. The long-range rifle duel and swinging-bucket scenes in "Joe Kidd".
7. Sissy Spacek's and Lee Marvin's resturant scene in "Prime Cut".
8. The sinking of "No Name City" in "Paint Your Wagon"
9. The flood and explosion scenes in "Dante's Peak".
