Hi,
I just tried connecting the PD6 thru it's Firewire (ieee1394) to my PC
but though the PC recognizes the PD6 as
"FOSTEX-FX-FIRE IEEE 1394 SPB2 Device - (G "
when I try accessing it, i keep getting a
" Disk structure is corrupted or unreadable "
Any reason why this is happening? Or am I doing something wrong?
regards

Follow-up
OS- Windows XP Pro with Service Pack1
Another thing - the FAQ on fostexdvd.net says ---
While Microsoft Windows 98SE & Me will mount or 'see' the DVD-RAM
drive of the PD-6 without any additional software, users of Microsoft
Windows 2000 and XP do require an external software driver. We
recommend a package called Instant CD/DVD by Pinnacle Systems
(http://www.pinnaclesys.com/ProductPage_n.asp?Product_ID=1152&Langue_ID=7).
It is IMPORTANT however to only install the InstantWrite part of the
package supplied by Pinnacle. This is achieved by canceling the
automatic installation screen, opening or 'exploring' the CD-ROM,
opening the folder named "InstantCDDVD" and selecting (double click)
the file called "InstantWrite.msi". This will install the necessary
drivers to enable the PD-6 drive to be recognised by your Windows
operating system when it is connected via the Firewire cable.
--- this is too cumbersome - isn't there an alternative?

Hi Vinod
In short no!!
I had this same problem with my pc. I actually bought and installed Instant
CD/DVD and sure enough the PC saw the PD6 as a drive and I could access the
files etc. On my laptop which has XP Pro and Instant CD/DVD loaded I haven't
had a problem!! Fostex are aware of this problem and I 'thought' were
bundling a driver for Win 2k and XP. Maybe Robert Morgan-Males at Fostex can
help you. <robert@morgan-males.com>

Not that it really matters to me personally (not a PD-6 user) but this
routine is Windows only, no Mac?

Isn't it a little silly to be selling a hardware product these days which is only out of the box compatible with 5+ year old, no longer available operating systems? |

I just finished reading the Fostex FR-2 manual and that machine can only be
connected to a PC, not a Mac. Could this be because the FR-2 output is
USB? Are there any new hard disc recorders that can be connected to a Mac,
and what output (USB, firewire, etc) is used?

No, this could not be the reason as ALL Macs have fully compliant USB. As a
matter of fact if we remember our history, it was Apple that really brought
USB to to prominence when the first iMac was released. Prior to that, USB
(an Intel invention, I believe) was on almost every PC but never used for
very much. Apple decided to do away with floppy discs (too limited
capacity), ADB (Apple Desktop Bus used for low data needs such as keyboard,
mouse etc.), serial printer ports and so forth. Many predicted this spelled
the death, again, of Apple as a viable company. Instead, it prompted what is
now almost universally utilized on all hardware platforms, USB as a viable
connection and data protocol for keyboards, pointing devices, printers and
any other data transfer where speed is not a big issue.

I am not sure which recorders can connect directly to a Mac (or a PC for
that matter) one reason being that I have not been involved with any of the
recorders that REQUIRE connection to a host computer to transfer data out of
the machine. I do believe that the Sound Devices recorder (not yet released)
will connect directly to a Mac via Firewire, and its internal drive will
mount on the desktop just like an external Firewire drive or another Mac in
Target Disk Mode.

Hi Jeff!
I hope you are well.
Just another problem with Microsoft which decided not to include DVD
reading/writing tech into their Win XP. Can you imagine one has to
have WIN98 or ME to do this seamlessly? I lost a lot of time trying to
get the PD6 to talk to my PC.
I hope LINUX will come soon for all of us!
warm regards from very hot and humid Bombay!

Hello Mike
I tried the Manuals part of the Fostex site and the FR2 wasn't
there... Is it there somewhere else?

I have heard that the reason that you cannot connect the FR-2 to a MAC
is because the MAC may damage the directory structure in the card,
which puts the audio on the card at risk of being lost.
I know that MACs tend to write some desktop information into the root
directory of any disk that they mount. This may cause the FR-2 to
freak out.
