How were the flying scenes in the 1950s Superman series created? Chromakey
wouldn't have worked the way it does today as the series was made in black
and white.

IIRC they developed a way to use the ole classic zoom'n'dolly Hitchcock
effect to make superman appear to move towards/away from the camera without
the back-projection becoming too obvious... Simple but clever

Probably rear-screen projection for the TV show. But you should be aware that
"chroma key" type image compositing has been around since long before color TV
and color motion pictures. Many techniques have been developed to create
traveling mattes for compositing. Before color, black or white backgrounds,
sodium vapor lamps to expoit narrow film spectral sensitivities, and a bunch of
other things. Oh, and some of the original "Superman" TV series was produced
in color (two-strip Technicolor, IIRC).
