Kaiser's yacht focus of Bayonne Historical Society

British maritime historian and former Sotheby's auctioneer Michael Naxton will
speak to the Bayonne Historical Society at a 1 p.m. luncheon on April 24 at the
RnBz Restaurant, Broadway and Linnet Street.
Naxton will talk about the yacht, "Meteor III," which was built in 1902 for
Germany's Kaiser Wilhelm by Townsend & Downey at their boatworks on Shooters
Island, off Bayonne. The boat, a gaff topsail schooner designed by Bayonne
resident Archibald Cary Smith, had an imperial bedroom suite and a dining room
that seated 24.
The society will also screen a short silent film made by Thomas A. Edison's film
company. It shows President Theodore Roosevelt and his daughter, Alice,
accompanying the Kaiser's son, Prince Henry of Prussia, to the christening and
launching of the Meteor III on Feb. 25, 1902. The Roosevelt were among some
3,000 guests invited to the event.
Walter Wiechetek, chef of RnBz, will show an original menu from the luncheon
that followed the yacht launching and will recreate some of the gourmet items
served as appetizers for the luncheon.
