Sounds of Silents: Original Musical Scores Performed Live with Classic
Cinema
The Kansas City Public Library presents silent films the way the
filmmakers intended: with live musical performances accompanying each frame.
Local composer Jeffrey Ruckma leads the Spoonbender Consort, playing his own
unique scores with eclectic instrumentation arranged for documentary and
dramatic films from the Silent Era.
The series concludes with Diary of a Lost Girl on Saturday, June 21,
at 3:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Truman Forum at the Plaza Branch, 4801
Main St.
This second collaboration between German director G.W. Pabst and
iconic actress Louise Brooks chronicles the travails of a young woman who is
cast off by her family and alienated from society before fate elevates her
to the aristocracy.
The Spoonbender Consort offers a cross-cultural mix of kalimbas and
bata drum as well as Western woodwinds, piano, and the expressive bass
playing of Kansas City bandleader Bill McKemy.
Admission is free. Click here or call 816.701.3407 to indicate your
interest in attending. Free parking is available in the Library District
Parking Garage at 10th and Baltimore.

Oops. You are correct. I'm posting screening notices to more than 10
forums now, and it takes a lot of time. Sometimes I get in a hurry and make
silly mistakes.
BTW, Verizon has informed me that they will stop supporting alt newsgroups
on Wednesday, June 25th, so I'm not sure how much longer I'll be posting
screening notices to alt.movies.silent, alt.comedy.laurel-hardy, and
alt.movies.chaplin. You can still get my postings of silent-film related
news stories and screening notices at Nitrateville and the Yahoo silent film
group. Relevant articles and screenings will be posted at
SilentComedians.com, Yahoo Chaplin, Yahoo BusterKeatonFans, Yahoo Harold
Lloyd, Yahoo Sons of the Desert, The Harold Lloyd Forum, Annette's Harold
Lloyd Forum, The Louise Brooks Society, and the Serial Squadron silent
serials forum.

You will be sorely missed if you're current list of film showings and
topical news alerts stops.
Hope you find another way to continue.

There are any number of free news servers available. Aioe.org, for one.
That's what I switched to when I learned Verizon was no longer going to
carry alt. |

Thanks for the tip. Verizon shut me down a day early. This Aioe news
server should work for me even when I'm not at home.
I'll continue with screening notices and silent film news for the present
time. I don't always read a.m.s. every day because the level and quality of
discussion has greatly decreased.
