I watched Nothing But a Man last night, DVR'd off HD-Net Movies some time
ago.
I was surprised to see this 1964 feature pillarboxed to 4x3 within the 16x9
HD frame. By 1964, American theaters had been cropping to 1.85x1 for a
decade.
The credits had large vertical margins, making it clear that THEY were
framed for widescreen. But the movie itself clearly wasn't. At one point I
put my TV into zoom mode, which basically emulates how movie theaters
project standard widescreen. The film looked terrible that way.
The IMDB doesn't list an AR for this film.
Does anyone know the story behind this? Was it like Return of the Secaucus
7--shot for non-theatrical presentation, then picked up for theaters after
it was finished?

HD-Net Movies respected the intended AR of an independent or foreign
production that was made in a transitional era. By the way, we know the
intended AR of late theatrical films by Kubrick, Fassbinder & Tarkovsky.
Have you seen these:
Carnival of Souls (1962)
Lord of the Flies (1963)
The Pawnbroker (1964)
Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! (1965)
When these are presented today, have you ever seen them shown with top &
bottom cropped, or in a wider AR than 4:3? I haven't. |
