What perfectly perfect movie weekend! Even though trashbag comedy
"Vegas" benefitted from "Speed Racer's" demise. Oh yeah, "Iron Man"
did too!!

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- "Speed Racer" was lapped in its
opening weekend at the box office as "Iron Man" continued to fire its
jets with $50.5 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates
Sunday.

Emile Hirsch stars in "Speed Racer," which was No. 2 at the box office
this weekend.

The anime-inspired race movie edged into the No. 2 spot with $20.2
million, slightly ahead of the 20th Century Fox comedy "What Happens
in Vegas," which debuted at $20 million.

"Our tracking was stalled toward the end," said Dan Fellman, president
of Warner Bros. theatrical distribution of market surveys before the
"Speed Racer" opening.

Directed by the Wachowski brothers, best known for the "Matrix"
franchise, "Speed Racer" was panned by many film critics. Fellman
added the movie would have difficulty recouping its $120 million
budget.

What the eff does that mean?  Tracking?  Hunh?

I'll guess that it means they were tracking a steadily mounting
audience-enthusiasm that suddenly hit a big wall of who-gives-a-
sh*t...

They say that every time. But I can't see how they even thought a movie
like this was going to be a big buzz. If they leave it in the theaters
long enough, it'll give them a fair return. Then they can make more
money on the DVD. And the foreign market. I can't wait to see what
it'll do in Asia.

You know what? 'Speed Racer' is a lot of fun. I enjoyed it.

Yeah, it's not what the majority of people want to see this year. But
what is that to do with me? I'm not the majority of people.

Thank Christ.

No, I'll just marvel at Hollywood's insistence on churning out this
video game commercial with a movie facade.
