Many ISPs are dropping free USENET access as a
cost-cutting/profit-enhancing move to remain competitive.

You may acquire a "free" USENET account from the very provider you sent
your post, above, teranews.

There is a one-time charge of a few dollars, after which all usage is
free of charge.

And because of direct government pressure.

Naaa!

In the case of my ISP, about $9 of each user's monthly fees was
assigned to that ISP's contract with a USENET provider.

Dropping free USENET essentially added $9 per month per customer profit
to the bottom line.

Anyone dumb enough to use the USENET for child porn is likely smart
enough to use an anonymous USENET client.

Well, yeah. It's a win-win for everyone except--as always--the
consumer. The ISPs collect the same amount of money while providing
fewer services, and scum like Cuomo get to pretend they "stopped kiddy
porn". And the porn fans don't really care, because they can simply
sign up with a dedicated Usenet provider or get it elsewhere.

Hopeless. Absolutely hopeless. But at least it's also stupid and
utterly without point.

Is there any reason you can't use Google Groups to get to Usnet? That
is what I'm on right now. http://groups.google.com.

Give it a try and see if does what you want....it does for me.

It is incredibly slow, the interface is crude and has no killfile facility
whatsoever, and a lot of sites discard all traffic from google because of
their severe spam problem. Google has not been a good thing for Usenet at
all.
