Just watched the 2 early (1919) Lang serial films which jointly are
titled Spiders. Lang intended to make 2 more but didn't. I was wondering
if the story would be left hanging, but it wrapped up more or less.
Interestingly there is a character who is seen in a number of disguises
who is also a master of hypnotic psychic control. Foreshadowing Mabuse
in 1922.
The mood of the films is much like Judex, the central criminal female
character even looks a good bit like the one in Judex, though from what
I gathered she is the actress (Lil Dagover) who played the woman in the
white gown (don't recall character's name) in Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.
The opening titles said that Lang was slated to direct Caligari, but was
busy on another project. I wonder what it would have looked like if Lang
had directed it.....hmmmm....

In SPIDERS Lil Dagover actually plays the priestess that is killed by
the central criminal female character who is played by Ressel Orla. |
