I just saw The Garden of Eden (well,,, sort of) it was very witty and
smart. The primary problem was that it looked like a DVD-R taken
straight from a rather old and glitchy VHS tape.
It was on Westlake Video, which I've noticed seem to specialize in doing
pretty awful DVD versions of silent films.
Now let me apologize to anyone who is affiliated with Westlake, I hope
you take no offense. But.....
Whenever I open my NetFlix envelope and see that the video is on
Westlake, I cry out "Oh NO!" Why couldn't it have been Kino? or Image
Entertainment?
I suppose these are simply too expensive for NetFlix to mail out into
the big bad world. Though I have received a few of them.
pardon my kvetching,,,,

On a lighter note I received my copy of La Roue yesterday to my
surprise, days ahead of it's May 6 release date. The half an hour of it
that I've seen so far is wonderful. I'm quite happy with it. Thanks
Flicker Alley for not being Westlake.
And though he had nothing to do with this one as far as I know,,,, God
bless David Shepherd,
as always |

Add to your list of good companies Flicker Alley, who have the choice
version of GARDEN OF EDEN available as a genuine DVD in a nice
transfer with a good musical score. Image Entertainment is not
releasing new silent titles, and David Shepard, Lobster Films, and
several other excellent individuals are releasing fine things through
Flicker Alley.
I recently got a copy of WAY DOWN EAST from Netflix that proved to be
Westlake Video -- it was horrible. The score was basically the same
four chords repeated over and over on a cheap string synthesizer,
regardless of what was happening on the screen. It probably was looped
for 149 minutes, though I couldn't swear to it as I didn't have the
patience to check. If you jump from the DVD menu to any of the chapter
stops (there are a total of six, the first oddly labelled "chapter
5"), the music is exactly the same as what you were hearing on the
menu screen.
It would be nice if Netflix told us what edition of a particular film
we were getting. Another thread alluded to vandals who rent quality
DVDs from Netflix but return cheap public domain DVDs as a way of
improving their video library at the public's expense -- identifying
the publishing company would help Netflix track down who these
bastards are, once someone complains that the DVD is not as
advertised.

Flicker Alley's website lists The Garden of Eden as "currently out of
print".

Maybe Netflix couldn't get a hold of any. Waiting for my copy of La
Roue to arrive, though I caught a portion of it on TCM last Sunday. |

Got my copy of La Roue surprisingly before it's announced release date.
Watched all 4.5 hours of it which went by surprisingly fast, and already
want to watch it again. It's quite good really.
And there in the end "restoration" titles was none other than David
Shepherd. It's hard to think of any single person who's done more for
preservation. He's really a bit of a hero to me.
I noticed that flickeralley said garden of eden was out of print. I
looked on Amazon and found one copy for sale at a rather high price.
It's a charming film, and it's star could hardly be more charming. But
though I wouldn't mind owning it, I don't really need to.
Take care
