AVALON - Visiting boaters can get the sensation of time travel during
Catalina Island's 21st annual Silent Film Benefit and the nostalgic Avalon
Ball, both taking place May 17.

The Silent Film Benefit will take place in the Casino's historic
Avalon Theater. When it first opened in 1929, this 1,100-seat Art Deco-style
theater hosted many star-studded events with some of Hollywood's best-known
movie icons.

Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" is this year's feature. This groundbreaking
1927 film tells of a futuristic world that is polarized by "thinkers" and
"doers." The status quo is shaken up when the son of the city's mastermind
falls in love with a working-class prophet.

Organist Robert Salisbury has created an original score for the film,
which will be performed live on the theater's landmark Page Theater Organ
during the showing.

Last year's event was an overwhelming success, organizers said,
raising more than $30,000 to support the Catalina Island Museum's efforts to
share the island's unique cultural history with visitors.

Silent Film Benefit tickets are $15 for adults and $13 for children.
To purchase tickets, call (310) 510-2424, ext. 1.

Island visitors can continue their nostalgic Catalina adventure that
evening, trading in their popcorn buckets for dancing shoes at the Avalon
Ball.

The Avalon Ball will bring big band sounds of the 1930s and 1940s to
the Avalon Casino Ballroom. Attendees can dance the night away, showing off
their fox trot and jitterbug skills. Moria's Modern Rhythmists Dance
Orchestra will perform, and entertainer Maxwell Demille will serve as master
of ceremonies.

The event is scheduled from 6 to 10 p.m., with check-in starting at 4
p.m. Avalon Ball organizers urge participants to purchase tickets well in
advance, as this event has sold out the previous two years.

Advance tickets are available online at www.avalonball.com. Catalina
Express plans an unscheduled boat run back to Long Beach following the
event.
