The horror flick MORTUARY apparently premiered on TV a couple of years
ago. (I'm guessing Showtime.) Before remembering who directed it, I
was prepared to opine that, though having little talent for suspense,
he showed a considerable gleeful energy ...and that horror fans who
miss that sort of vitality might want to give this one a look (...its
3.6 at IMDb notwithstanding). There are several familiar faces here
(including StarTrek:TNG's Tasha Yar), in a script whose goofy plot
still manages decent dialogue. What I wish I'd known sitting down was
this 'R'-rated horror movie is actually a '50s retro gore-
comedy ...which I'm sure I'd have realized much sooner had I
remembered that the director was Tobe Hooper. Fwiw, I do consider
Hooper's presence reason enough for horror fans to find some fun
here. For anyone else, MORTUARY is marginally recommended.
