Up until now I haven't really needed a hand held mic and when I did, I
simply borrowed one but I'm going to purchase one soon. All I've ever
used is the Beyerdynamic M58. I like it but would like to hear what
anyone could suggest as another option, or am I on a winner with this
mic?
Cheers,

The M58 is a top choice in a hand held mic as is the Electrovoice RE
50. Both are omni patterns. Another proven performer is the cardioid
pattern Sennheiser MD 46. The RE 50 seems to be the de facto standard
in HH ENG world.

Fine in a boom with someone who knows what they are doing wagging it about
but you don't really want a mic with a tight polar pattern in the hands of
the average journalist, omni is much safer.
Personally I like the Beyer M58 over the EV RE50, it's sleeker has a
longer handle so the business end tends to pushed those couple of inches
closer.

Funny story; I was doing a pilot and there was a day of all-out full-load
automatic rifle fire. To save my condensers, I had the boomman use the
RE16. Two days later, the director came to me freaking out about how he
couldn't hear the dialog in dailies. I fairly unsuccessfully assured him
that everything would be fine in the mix, and we went on. When the pilot
came out and by golly, all the dialoge, crisp and clear. Thank God we have
elliminated tape hiss, but. . . . It worked like a charm.

Then the choice must be the "Hammer," EV's 635<g>. You can use it as a
speaker to listen back to your report as well!
