The no-frills Dardenne brothers seemed to have made
another star out of his non-professional actors. Deborah
Francois, who gave an intense perfrmance in _L'Enfant_,
is exquisitely cool and composed as ex-piano virtuoso
hopeful out to avenge the destruction of her career by
a convert pianist (Catherine Frot). She understands that
acting and revenge are very similar -- just stay stationary
and patient, and just let the imaginative audience and the
mid-life crisis-suffering cellists and pianists project
their thoughts and desires on her. There is just
a tiny bit of blood in this filim but the revenge is icy and
masterfully executed indeed. Francois will long be
remembered for this role. The film's weakness is
Catherine Frot, never one of my favorites. She is
neither haughty nor emotively fragile enough for the
role of the concert pianist. During her scenes I
unfortunately tend to be distracted by my curiosity
about her (no doubt) numerous plastic surgery. Surely
there must be other actresses available? Pascal Greggory
is great in it (in his _Gabrielle_ mode) but is only in a
few scenes. I was expecting a lot of piano music but
was pleasantly surprised that the Shostakovich Trio
No. 2 (stunning to attend in live concerts) and Schubert's
nocturne trio are featured. The director Denis Dercourt
clearly knows more about music than hacks like
Michael Haneke -- no traces of the overused Schubert
E-flat trio here, despite the fact that it would be quite
appropriate. All in all, a much better film than I
expected. That's how it got released in theaters despite
the fact that it has no real recognizable stars (other
than Greggory). |
