A dose of thrill and emotions

The Pioneer
Sunday, April 18, 2004

This is vintage Clint Eastwood, and deserves every bit
the two Academy awards it has got.

Though pegged on the murder of a beautiful 19-year-old
woman (Emmy Rossum), Mystic River unfolds slowly,
throwing up the emotional travails of all characters
associated with the murder: The derangement of a woman
(Marcia Gay Harden) who suspects that her husband (Tim
Robbins) is the culprit, who, in turn, renders a
spellbinding display of culpability; a mother hen-act
handled with aplomb by Laura Linney, and some stellar
lawful and unlawful action by a bereaved father (Sean
Penn) and a conscientious cop (Kevin Bacon) whose
marriage in on the rocks.

This may not be a teeth-grinding thriller, but is an
effective emotional portrait nonetheless.
