we all know of the cinema verite style. how come it's only been used
with people?
how come i never saw a cinema verite film on animals or plants?
or how about a cinema verite on the interior design of house devoid of
people?
ever notice how documentary film on animals or architecture tend to be
well thought out, elaborately planned, impeccable. of course, the
reaons are obvious. wild animals tend to be shy and afeared and you
gotta carefully set up cameras to capture the right moment.
and if you're gonna shoot a film about the taj mahal or the vatican,
who wants to see wobbly camera movement and such? it would just look
like the work of a wino cinematographer.
so is cinema verite only applicable with people? why? cuz people,
unlike animals, can agree to be filmed and tolerate the cameraman with
his lurching equipment? also, because unlike architecture, people
always exist in a state of crisis of emotions, choices, actions,
motion etc. and has to followed topsy turvy?
but even here, is cinema verite applicable to all people? i can
understand where it might be the only option like the war front where
the cameraman has to run around here and there. but suppose it's a
cinema verite movie about a hindu yogi who sits still on his arse for
12 hrs. i mean what's the sense of wobbly camera movement and all that
when the guy's off in another corner of the universe? |
