Hello,
In a lot of podium situations at events I generally take the house feed and
that's a box a chocolates so I also put up my own which is usually just a
newsy Electrovoice RE-50B.
For a high profile event would a Sennheiser MKH-50 work a lot better? with
the cardiod pattern I think it would be able to pick up the speakers who
move around a lot, but would it reject enough background noise like a
handheld dynamic mic? Part of the problem is the leakage from the P.A.
systems at these events.
Any comments?

With the MKH 50 you need 48v phantom. Not sure if I would want a $1400
mic on a podium. I would stay with the RE50.

and it square ,ugly,and its hard to put a tv logo cube on it , , I was
more thinking about old 452 akg with ck-1 and shining metal grill  )

I use a remote Schoeps capsule on a little Schoeps gooseneck like the ones
seen on awards shows. I also have the Shure Presidential Podium package with
two side by side mounted SM57s, as well as a pair of AKG C747s. If you need
maximum P.A. volume I would recommend a dynamic cardioid like the SM57, but
only if you can get it close to the speaker. Most events seem to prefer the
small size of the C747s or Countryman podium mics. these sound better then
the dynamics but are prone to P-popping.
