I avoided this film out of hand when it first appeared due to the
obviously violent tone, but She Who Deserves To Be Pampered was
interested, so we went for it and thoroughly enjoyed it. Its a great,
nasty piece of work, a very tense and jarring psycho-drama, literally,
but also a high-grade production. Most of the characters are very
"Pink" in pathetic ways and the few who are not are so set-upon by
dealing with the others, they're downright puckered by it. This has a
lot to do with why the Law sucks so badly; its attempting to cope with
people who have the judgement of fatigued children and/or horny
marmots in the first place. Extra points off if they are (or choose to
be) just plain stupid. That grappling process is well-utilized here,
popping in and out of view at key junctures.
Its a film that starts out appearing to be one thing and gradually
becomes another. I'd be tainting it to explain at all, but it has a
certain resemblance to "Memento," in which you are pulled this way and
that, trying to find a main thread that keeps eluding you. I found
this one far more interesting, less jarring, because it IS more
linear, whereas much of "Memento"'s point was that the main character
had no day-to-day memory, only fragments, forcing the viewer to define
& redefine the structure entire along with him.
"Identity" is more "traditional," in that it is more clearly leading
to a conclusion. Once you have enough clues in hand, you can see that
it draws on certain traditional thriller themes, but they are not
revealed until near the end. Its MEGA-CREEPY, exhibiting very good
editing of a not-half-bad script. Some of the shocks verge on being a
bit "cheap," but I have no complaints, as they were of a cloth I
expected going in.
The cast is quite good, although Ray Liotta and John Cusack stand
out. John Hawkes and Jake Busey play meaningful creeps. Amanda Peet
chews some carpet in exactly the right way. An intense bunch who do
work of real merit.
It'll make you jump in more than a few spots and when you think its
resolved, hey, no it ain't. Its a definite white-knuckler and while
not exactly competitive quality-wise with films such as "The Road To
Perdition" or "Dark City," its a somewhat blended genre bit that did
not leave me going "$#@!, there go 2 more hours I'll never get back!"
I recommend it, especially if you're looking for a gripper to see with
a group or a girl whom you would like to have CLUTCH you, eieieieei!!!
