I've been flipping between the discs and enjoying this set
immensely.......it's been YEARS since we've waited for this, and AB
did a bang-up job.
Highlights so far:
1. The 8mm silent home movie footage. Includes a "crossbow arrow in
the head" special effect that didn't make ANY of the versions. Very
cool and makes one wonder exactly how much shit they shot for this
film.
2. Richard Rubenstein's commentary track. Yes, the man is a insidious
money-grubbing suit, but his memory of the production aspects and his
insight into the film are extensive and interesting.
Hate to say it, but it's better than Romero's track on disc 1.
3. The exhaustive production still galleries. I felt gypped when the
Divimax single disc came out and the still gallery consisted of a
bunch of newspaper ads, but they saved everything for disc 2.
A insane amount of stills, some of which we've seen a million times,
some of which I don't think have ever been seen at all until now.
4. The UK TV spots. Great editing on these spots, much better than the
American TV spots.
5. FINALLY, a excellent quality version of the Argento Version! I'm
going to microwave the Dutch Filmworks set later on, or donate it to a
homeless shelter....a fitting end for the piece of shit release it is.
The ONE DOWNSIDE so far:
I'd always assumed that the lame audio work on the Argento version was
due to the fact that I was always watching bootlegs.
Now, hearing it even in 5.1, it's so flat and dull. Argento put all of
his effort into his beloved Goblin music and ear-aching gunshot
effects and just half-assed everything else. Not something you'd
normally notice, but when you compare to Romero's version and see how
much effort Romero put into foley and sound fx (footsteps, door slams,
all the little stuff) Argento's version sounds sort of unfinished. |
