Flash Gordon Serials 1936-1940: A Heavily Illustrated Guide by Roy Kinnard,
Tony Crnkovich, and R. J. Vitone (Hardcover - April 14, 2008)
I just received this book from amazon.com. $44, plus shipping. It is kind
of expensive for only 204 pages. The bulk of the book is composed of
synopses of each chapter from the three Flash Gordon serials, and much
smaller amounts written about the Buck Rogers serial. There is also a
20-page introduction and history of the Flash Gordon serials. The Flash
Gordon chapters contain many stills from each chapter. Also each chapter is
followed by comments, which might contain background information about that
chapter or quotes from the stars or technicians about the making of the
serial. Some comment sections are quite small.
This book is not as meaty as I might have liked but there is a lot of neat
stuff here. One example: Charles Middleton (Ming) was paid $500 per week to
act in "Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars". However, he was only contracted for
two weeks work. Buster Crabbe (Flash) was paid $400 per week, but worked
for the entire 8 weeks of filming.
If you love the Flash Gordon serials I guess you have to have this book.
That was my thinking anyway.
