Sorry. I agree, I need a better camera/mic and every year I say I'm
going to do it right next year...and never do. It's just tiny camera I
can carry in my pocket for a lazy, poor man's video to show my staff who
had to stay in LA and miss the show. I just throw it online for fun.

Maybe next year I'll do it right...........nah.

Maybe we (RAMPS contributors who NEVER make it to NAB) could start the
"Buy A Decent Mic Fund". or B.A.D. M-F for short! If we start now
....maybe by this time next year we could buy John a used "Realistic"
omni-directional dynamic mic from E-Bay!

The sad thing is...it would be an imptovement :(

-Jason

P.S. - All kidding aside, Thanks to John for providing the video , I
always enjoy it anyway.

I played the whole thing back in WMP9 at 1.4 x play speed and it sounded
great!

On my computer the WMP9 kept buffering, stumbling, freezing and so on... I

guess you have to be running Windows to get Microsoft software to behave. No
trouble with Quicktime but John's video is not posted in that format... oh
well.

(all kidding aside, can someone tell me why streaming Quicktime always seems
to behave better, certainly on my Macs, and I have seen it do very well on
Windows machines too, but every time I have watched video streaming on PCs
it doesn't seem to work so well).

Well, that certainly has NOT been my experience on PC's, I've found the
latest versions of WM, RM, OT and streaming flash to all be performing
fairly well. What type of internet connection do you have and what sort of
average throughput rates do you normally get. I stream WMA files (MSN Music)
all day without a buffer or a hiccup. Try saving the NAB video file to your
desktop and then play it off your desktop/harddrive. I have another friend
who watched it on his OSX laptop with the current WMP for Mac and he
reported no anomalies. I don't have any direct hands on experience with the
latest Mac Player but you may want to check under OPTIONS, PERFORMANCE
(assuming the Mac Player has something similar) and see what your Network
Buffering settings are set at. Mine are set to DEFAULT buffering but you can
also go in an put in a numerical figure for how many seconds of buffering
you want WMP to use if you want to experiment and fine tune it to your
connection. It's really a very simple player without lots of resource
hogging bells and whistles...I'd be more suspicious of the quality of the
stream.

Based on what you have said, viewing John's video must have been suffering

from server difficulties or my ISP at that moment. I may have hastily
suspected Windows Media Player (and I do have the current version) because
previous versions were very buggy on the Mac. Thanks Charlie for your very
careful info and direction (so I won't go off on some insane Microsoft
tirade).

I think MS went pretty lean on the Mac player specifically. It doesn't
support some of the higher level DRM and other functions. They seem to have
just wanted a clean player that would allow 9 series WM audio and video
codecs to play. I'm in the beta program now for the 10 series player (no
codec changes...they are frozen now for standardization) so maybe I'll be
able to glean some more information on the Mac player from some of the MS
employed WM development group members who are in the private beta
newsgroups.

Very politely put, but I had the same problem in WMP. I enjoyed the
video though.

I guess we won't know the real issue since there is only one encoding and
one server.

John C.:

Thanks for the video. I just let it download during the afternoon (I'm
on a standard dialup) and then played it from the hard drive. It played
fine (on a Win 98SE platform) and I really enjoyed putting some faces
with names. Some of y'all looked just like I imagined and, others, not
even close. All were handsome as heck.

As far as micing it better... Next year, just ADR the whole thing...

Actually, it sounded fine. I could understand just about everything
said and, at least in this instance, that makes it good audio.

Thanks again.
